Concerns over the name Felix

DoG87 · 27/10/2021 20:10

The only name me and my partner both really like is Felix. In fact we love it. The only thing is I’m so worried he will get bullied because of Felix the cat or Felix cat food. I know kids can be bullied for any reason but I don’t want to give them a reason to bully him. Has anyone got a child called Felix or knows of a child called Felix? Do other kids pick at their name or associate it with a cat/cat food?

Of course young people will hear of Felix the cat as Felix is still a leading brand of cat food!

I have cats so unsure if that sways my opinion but yes, Felix is a cat. Or a cat food brand. It's an awful name for a human.

RightOnTheEdge · 27/10/2021 23:58

I love the name Felix.
My cat eats that food so I do think of the cat when I hear it but I don't think about it negatively.
I still think it's a great name.

Before opening the thread and reading your post, I thought "cat" from just seeing your title.

He won't either 'be bullied' or 'not be bullied' because of a name, but people will forever associate it with the cat, or the cat food.

@ImNotWhoYouThinkIam

My friends brother is called Felix. We called him Cat Food for years. But it was an affectionate name not bullying.
I'm pretty sure he didn't consider it how you describe.
ImNotWhoYouThinkIam · 28/10/2021 01:07

@TheEvilPea unless you're him, and you've been lying to us for 30 years, I can assure you he did. We all (as a group) had silly nicknames for each other. We would have had no issue telling someone else in the group if we didn't like something.

I love Felix and it is on our list. I have two cats though and have the same reservations as you, wondering if people would think that we are cat obsessed. It is such a lovely name and one that DH loves too - which is rare, trust me! Ha!

Blubells · 28/10/2021 11:01

In the UK it's definitely a well known cat food brand 🐈

In the US it may not be?

Yes

Felix has become, if not common exactly, pretty popular in the last few years. It's not like it will be that unusual.

Hobbesmanc · 28/10/2021 15:22

Awww it means lucky or fortunate - like Felicity. Hence why it was popular as a moggy name. I love those strong Roman x names- Max, Rex. Great choice

I have a Felix and his cousins are Max and Rex!!!

No bullying here....it's a great name. Chosen because it wasn't too popular.....so I would cheekily say 'don't use it'!! Lol.
It means Happy.

MeredithGreyishblue · 28/10/2021 15:39

Lots of names are brands as well. I wouldn't worry. There's lots of human Felixes around here and I haven't heard anything negative about it.

20viona · 28/10/2021 15:45

Really don't like felix

BalloonSlayer · 28/10/2021 19:02

Felicity and felix actually mean happiness, not good luck. But good luck is a happy thing so I expect that's where the confusion lies.

I always thought cats got called felix because of feline.

Etonmessisyum · 28/10/2021 19:06

It’s not a common name here but it’s cute maybe quite posh? I do know a cat called Felix. I think if you like it then go for it he’s your baby and I’m sure he’ll suit his name. Or he might be born and you think he looks like a Nathaniel or something else congratulations and best wishes when he comes along

PuertoPollensa · 28/10/2021 19:06

I don't think anyone gets bullied about their name these days?

Breadtoastbread · 28/10/2021 20:14

I have met lots of little toddlers called felix soon it’s actually a very popular name in some areas I don’t think therefore ppl will be bullied or shocked by it or call him anything relation to a cat, I think you’re more likely to find there will be more than one felix in his year or school

reallyalurker · 28/10/2021 23:13

I've just read a novel, and the sequel to it, in which the hero is called Felix. I buy Felix for my cat occasionally and I never thought of that in the context of this character's name. I particularly don't think children are going to think of cat food.

SE13Mummy · 28/10/2021 23:21

I know of a few boys, aged 19 and under named Felix. When my 16-yr-old told me about the newest Felix, I said, "ooh cats like Felix, like Felix" and was rewarded with a withering look. She had no idea what on earth I was on about.
