with the 'tine' to rhyme with 'fine', or to rhyme with 'bean'?

So like Cleh-men-tyne or Cleh-men-teen?

Teen. I've only heard it pronounced Tyne in the oh my darling song.

DPotter · 27/10/2021 14:44

Worked at a hospital named after Churchill's wife and the official name was Clem-an teen. Everyone called it the Clem or Clemmie though

EishetChayil · 27/10/2021 14:58

Neither, to be honest. "Clem" is one of the ugliest sounds I can think of (sounds like Victorian slang for something rude), so neither ending can salvage it.

TuftyMarmoset · 27/10/2021 15:15

Teen like the fruit. Tyne sounds a bit unnatural to me.

Well I think it's lovely!

Teen

Helpimfalling · 27/10/2021 15:57

Thyme

TinaYouFatLard · 27/10/2021 15:59

Either pronunciation. I love this name!

MsTSwift · 27/10/2021 16:02

To rhyme with wine. More elegant. Stunning name.

CoalCraft · 27/10/2021 16:14

I've only heard it pronounced -tyne

georgarina · 27/10/2021 16:19

I read it as rhyming with 'Tyne'

I think the other pronunciation will lead to a lifetime of correcting people

georgarina · 27/10/2021 16:20

This was a name I considered btw! I love it. Only drawbacks for me were a long last name, and not sure of a short form

scottishnames · 27/10/2021 16:25

SFAIK 'teen' (as in Winston Churchill's wife, also Christine, Pauline etc etc) is the trad English pronunciation (and also the French; and other European nations have similar: eg Italian 'Clementina'). 'Tyne' is American, spread across the Atlantic by the song.

user1493494961 · 27/10/2021 16:25

Fine

gogohm · 27/10/2021 16:27

Sorry I can't get past the song ...

SirChenjins · 27/10/2021 16:28

Fine/Tyne

Love Clemmie as a nn too - probably the result of watching Our Yorkshire Farm too much

Mailys · 27/10/2021 16:32

We have a daughter called Clementine! We always pronouce it as TYNE. And she's four but it still hasn't been shortened to Clemmie.

IndecisiveMama · 27/10/2021 16:32

My daughter is Clementine (the French pronunciation) but no-one gets it right so she either goes by her nickname or gets feisty about it! (Pick your battles wisely!!!)

mathanxiety · 28/10/2021 03:10

Teen.

Tyne makes me think of turpentine.

fashionSOS · 28/10/2021 03:17

I can't stop hearing Oh my darlin' Clementiiiine.

I think she'd probably end up being called Clem anyway, like the character in Life in Pieces.

Justilou1 · 28/10/2021 03:21

I like both, tbh… suspect she will be called both forever anyway. (Am leaning towards French pronunciation just because I love French names, and all the women & girls in my family have French names.)

SquarePeggyLeggy · 28/10/2021 03:24

Didn’t even occur to me to read it any other way than thyme

Branleuse · 28/10/2021 09:44

i like the teen sound

Chachachawoo · 28/10/2021 10:15

Was going to say tine until posters mentioned Churchill's wife pronounced it teen -and if that'd be your preference anyway. Then go with teen.
They are both lovely. It's a great name.

Blubells · 28/10/2021 10:59

think she'd probably end up being called Clem

I find Clem very masculine sounding, perhaps because I know a Clement.
