Marianne

I’m unsure if we’re having a boy or girl, but have had the name Marianne stuck in my head for weeks now. My husband is on board (he’s a huge Leonard Cohen fan) and I think I love it. Please share your opinions on it!

I love Marianne.

Only downside is I knew one who got called Maz by everyone, which is such a shame when the name is so beautiful! (Caroline to Caz doesn’t bother me because it’s not such a special name in the first place. In my view!)

Came on to write exactly what @WhatsWrongWithMyUsername has just said. I was actually going to call my DD Marianne but the Maz thing stopped me. The two Marianne’s I knew at school both ended up being known as Maz, but if you don’t mind that go for it as Marianne is beautiful.

I like it. I would have thought Mari would be the obvious nickname, rather than Maz.

Not keen on Caroline, though!

I know one Marieanne as an adult and I knew one as a child both known by their proper name.

I love it! DD3 was all set to be called Marianne until DH changed his mind and vetoed it.

I am maybe a bit biased though, as in France Mariane is a symbol of the Republic, and I am both French and a staunch republican 🙃

It was on our list for DD, it’s a beautiful name.

Argh, I forgot about ‘Maz’! That was what ended up putting us off Caroline last time… maybe, because we’re in Scotland, I could really push Mari instead and hope for the best! Very under-used and I have no idea why because it's lovely.

Of all conventional names I have a soft spot for Marianne.

Partly the French Revolution, partly Sense and Sensibility.

Beautiful name. If we’d had a second DD, it would have been high on the list.

The literary connotations are good, even the innate annoyingness of Marianne Dashwood doesn’t dent its loveliness.

Lovely. The only reason we didn’t use it for my second daughter is that it would have got a bit “sense and sensibility” with her older sister. Love the Leonard Cohen song and the french connection.
