I've found some online sources say "see-fus" and others "seff-us".

What do you think/have you heard?

I've never seen the name before tbh
See-fas is how I'd pronounce it

SalsaLove · 26/10/2021 06:27

I’ve heard it pronounced see fus, but that’s related to bocephas which was the nickname of a country music singer, Hank Williams Jr. It’s also found in the urban dictionary and meaning an idiot.

Shasha17 · 26/10/2021 06:32

The urban dictionary seems to have slang meanings for most names - people can just write their own entries about their friends. I searched my name, DHs names, and a couple of friends names to be sure and we are all in there with various meanings Grin

I think I'd pronounce it "ke-fus"

flashpaper · 26/10/2021 06:36

More "keh" than "key" though

Owlink · 26/10/2021 06:38

See fass

ifigoup · 26/10/2021 06:41

I’ve heard it as either SEE-fass or KEE-fass. It’s the name given by Jesus to Peter in the New Teatament because Cephas sounds like the Aramaic word for rock (Jesus says “on this rock I will build my church” - traditionally Peter/Cephas is said to be the first

leader of the church).

(Sorry, phone being weird and posted too soon!

bakingdemon · 26/10/2021 06:51

Whenever it's read in church I've heard people say "see-fass"

Srettel · 26/10/2021 11:26

I'd pronounce it Seh-fus.

SinoohXaenaHide · 26/10/2021 11:33

Yes the disciple's given name was Simon which in aramaic means "Reed" or "Weed" so when Jesus changed his name he was saying "People have called you Weedy but I'm calling you Rocky instead"

Normandy144 · 26/10/2021 11:36

I'd pronounce it Se-phus. Never heard of it.

Shasha17 · 26/10/2021 15:27

Thanks everyone! Do you like it?

See-fuss. The second syllable would have the same vowel sound as 'about' (as opposed to the a in 'cat').

degsydoodoos · 26/10/2021 15:56

I'm sure I've heard this in readings at church, pronounced as "Keffas" / "Keffus"
