Love this name but wondering if it is too close to alien? Would they get bullied?

Other alternatives I like are Eliot and Elias but I like Elian the most. Looking for an unusual name that can be pronounced in both spanish and english, any suggestions welcome, really struggling

It looks and sounds like a girl's name
Ellie-Anne

CatsArePeople · 25/10/2021 14:12

Don't like. Elias much better.

TuftyMarmoset · 25/10/2021 14:14

I didn’t make the alien connection but I agree it might sound a bit feminine. Elias is lovely, I’d just go with that.

KirstenBlest · 25/10/2021 14:14

Elias will be El-ee-as not El-eye-us

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 26/10/2021 02:23

I wouldn't have personally thought of the Alien thing, but you are right OP, "El - ee- an" might be a bit close. I'd personally choose lovely Elias but you will get the Anglo "Ee-lye-as" in the UK rather than the European "El -ee-as" so you'd have to tolerate that. But even popular Eliot will have it's issues as the spellings Elliot/Elliott are much more common here. Names like Antonio, Carlos, Santiago, Victor, Hector etc are relatively uncommon in the UK compared to Spain but I think they are spelt and mostly said the same?

WeDidntMeanToGoToSea · 26/10/2021 05:56

I think in Spanish you may risk Eliot being pronounced something like Eli-OTT. If you like it (I don't but that's more because it's a common name in the country I live in and I know a horrible one...) I would go with Elias - people will soon learn the 'ee' pronunciation.

Perhaps something like Sebastian?

SunShinesBrightly · 26/10/2021 07:59

How is Elian pronounced?
I read it as ‘Ellie-Anne’ but is it
‘Ee-Lee-Anne’ or something else?

SunShinesBrightly · 26/10/2021 08:07

What about Eliel?

The name Eliel can pronounced as "Eh-lee-EHL, EE-lee-ehl"

Blubells · 26/10/2021 09:13

I like Elian and would pronounce it Eh lee aan.

KirstenBlest · 26/10/2021 09:52

Antonio, Carlos, Santiago, Victor, Hector
Antonio sounds different in a UK accent, more like An-tone-ee-oh
Carlos will be Kah-lows
Santiago will be Santy-aygoh
Victor will be Vikduh
Hector will be Heckduh

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 26/10/2021 15:34

Ah, okay. Any suggestions that are unusual/uncommon but sound identical in both languages @KirstenBlest?

TatianaBis · 26/10/2021 15:35

Prefer Elias.

Like Rafael.

JackieCollinshasnoauthority · 26/10/2021 15:44

I like it, although my only reference point is Elian Gonzalez.

TuftyMarmoset · 26/10/2021 15:52

I had no idea that El-eye-as pronunciation was a thing. I read it as El-ee-as.

KirstenBlest · 26/10/2021 16:37

@IamnotwhouthinkIam, names that sound exactly the same in Spanish and English? I can't think of any.

Even Isabel sounds different the way my spanish mother-tongue friend says it - she says it sort of like Eessabel not Izuhbel.
Even Leo sounds different.

Most people I know with non-British names put up with the anglicised pronunciation, or use the english version of the name.

Something like Pablo or Pedro would be fairly easy

IamMaz · 26/10/2021 16:40

I like it. Unusual and 'foreign' sounding - in a good way!!!!

KirstenBlest · 26/10/2021 16:48

Diego or Salvador or Cristobal. I have no idea if the names are dated

Irishfarmer · 26/10/2021 16:48

Sorry, I did think alien before even reading your post.
As an Irish person I would say Elias as Ee-lie-as. But if @IamnotwhouthinkIam told me the correct pronunciation as above I would be able to say and remember it very easily.

The trouble is that you end up meeting lots of people throughout your life and generally people don't like being corrected.

Every time you meet anyone new or anyone new calls out your name, they will use what they think is the standard pronunciation.

We had an elian in our secondary school around 15 years ago and people teased him to no end ☹️
