I am part French but live in the UK, as will our child. Does this name work in English (pronounced tee bow)? I guess a nn would probably be Thib or Bo or something, though we would let that naturally evolve.

The main alternative currently is Felix, though I have a real soft spot for Ludovic.

I like the cyclist but would be reluctant to choose a name that required so much work by the bearer. I don't like Ludovic or Felix. There must be lots of other nice men's French names.

surely you can find a name that works in both languages ?
having to spell and explain one's name on nearly every new meeting is tedious in the extreme.

With names like this you have to consider secondary school where your child will have multiple teachers and cover teachers. It's going to be pronounced wrong for years. I was reading it as an unusual spelling of Shakespeare's Tybalt and I imagine people will turn to that mostly if you're lucky!

I think it's a great name OP and people will learn how to pronounce it before they learn to spell it. There are plenty of more commonplace names lots of people struggle to spell so I wouldn't let that put me off.

Thibault is a great name and I love it especially as it reflects your son’s heritage. I would absolutely go for it in spite of the fact that yes, your son will have to spell it out for people when he first meets them. ‘Tib’ or ‘Tee’ are great abbreviations too. Follow your heart and go for it!

I loved the name once you explained how to pronounce it, I wouldn't of had a clue otherwise. It's possible I'm just an idiot though!

I have a name which i have spent my lifetime spelling (and to a lesser extent pronouncing) to people.
I deliberately chose more recognisable/easy to spell names for my DC as a result of my own experiences.
I would choose Ludovic.

Stunning name - it’s an opportunity for others to learn something about him - will also make him v memorable. I am glad that I learned this name a pronunciation today and the insight around the connection with Theobald and Theobalds Rd. it’s a v easy name to remember and pronounce once told.

I would have pronounced it Ti-bolt and I think a lot of people in the UK will struggle with the pronunciation.

Souleymane. We learn at some point that he is formally called Thibauld. The actor looks a bit like Kris Marshall.

I really like it but again would had pronounced wrong - also like Felix but love Ludovic - and also Ludo as a nn goes well with the theos/lucas/milos that are all DS nicest friends :) but has a good gravitas if you want to stick to the full name

Who would want an ‘of the moment’ name - those are the ones that date the most.

It's a good name and you should go for it if you like it. As a pp said, most folks only mispronounce a name once and it doesn't happen often anyway because usually people are introduced to each other by another person who usually pronounces a name correctly.

It’s a very nice name, but nobody will ever pronounce it correctly I’m afraid. I have a friend who’s daughter is called Anais (they are not french), it’s a lovely name but no one, absolutely no one knows how to pronounce it so all family and friends call her “the baby”:) sometimes it’s a little awkward when you see aunties and others struggling, so it’s just something you will have to deal with if you are prepared.

Another answer as given by two other posters including myself is that it’s a classic and not common enough to date.

Yes, but I disagree. It peaked in the nineties when it was quite popular and has been on the slide since.

I worked with a Thibault, it's a great name. His nickname behind his back was Tybalt though.

It depends if him being called Thy-bolt would annoy you.
