Help please! Harriette or Violetta?

Help! We have a 2yr old named Beatrice Rose ‘Bea’ and we are struggling to choose a name for our second daughter due to be born in two weeks time.
Our last name is 3 syllables and ends in tine.

I love
Evangeline
Clementine - but these don’t sit well with our last name.
We also like
Harriette - Hatty
Violetta - Etta
Sylvie
Maeve
Maeva
Kitty
Felicity - Flick

Thoughts please 🙏🏼

I meant Sylvia...!!!

EugeniaGrace · 20/10/2021 00:02

Violetta Maeve (this is lovely, also like Lettie as a nickname)
Violet Maeve
Harriette Evangeline (Evangeline goes well in the middle)
Harriette Evelina
Katherine Felicity (Kitty)
Katherine Florence (Kitty)
Sylvie Maeva
Sylvie Marie

These are my favourites as first names. A few I like only as middle names or reminded me of other middle names. The only one I am not a fan of is Clementine.

alpinerain · 20/10/2021 03:18

I love the name Beatrice.Smile

Out of Harriette and Violetta, I would choose Harriette but I prefer Sylvie, Maeve & Maeva.

LetHimHaveIt · 20/10/2021 03:53

Yes; I'm going to call my daughter 'Henriet' because 'Henrietta' looks ' try hard' and 'silly' with all those extra letters 🙄

Those are different names. Harriette and Harriet are the same name.
PanicBuyingSprouts · 20/10/2021 08:09

As your family name has 3 syllables, I'd go for Sylvie.

LetHimHaveIt · 20/10/2021 08:33

Er - 'Henriet' isn't a name at all 🙄 I was making a point to those people who kept saying 'te' and 'ta' are 'silly, extra letters'. They aren't at all, and they're not affectations. They're in common usage. I've never thought Juliette Lewis or Juliette Binoche names would've looked better on their Oscar nominations without the silly 'te' at the end . . . 🙄

KirstenBlest · 20/10/2021 08:34

Evangeline - too long and will be yet another Evie
Clementine - but these don’t sit well with our last name. - too fruity
We also like
Harriette - Hatty - Harriet and Hattie are nice
Violetta - Etta - Giulietta is nicer
Sylvie
Maeve -rapidly becoming popular
Maeva - Ava with an M
Kitty - lovely
Felicity - Flick - yuk

TeaAndStrumpets · 20/10/2021 08:47

I've got a Harriet, she sometimes gets spelled Harriette or Harriett, even Harriot Confused

Any name you call your baby WILL be misspelled!

user1493494961 · 20/10/2021 09:57

Harriette and Violetta are too 'fussy', but I do like both Harriet and Violet.

Blubells · 20/10/2021 10:06

Violetta is much prettier and elegant sounding. Violet sounds a little harsh and too close to violent imo.

AliceinBorderland · 20/10/2021 10:13

I'm not keen on Maeve Maeva ...very old sounding names and not very nice. Rest are a bit fussy.

I like Evangeline though I've only met one and her nn was Vangie.

How about

Alexandra
Araminta
Clemency (If Clementine won't work with surname)
Viola
Genevieve

Lightningrain · 20/10/2021 10:13

I like Harriet but the -te on the end looks too fussy/frilly for my liking. I also think she’d get sick of explaining the spelling.

Are you pronouncing Violetta as ‘Vee oh le ta’? That’s how I’d read it as it seems like a European version of Violet. I’m not a fan of this one either way.

I like Clementine and Maeve but I think Maeve is becoming quite popular if that bothers you?

Skysblue · 20/10/2021 10:27

Violetta is pretty.

Harriette to me sounds silly, like you wanted to call her Harriet but tried to make it less old fashioned and ended up pretentious instead.

The others are all nice enough, although I don’t think much of Flick as a nickname - too easy to make fun of at secondary school.

Pemba · 20/10/2021 10:30

Harriette is how the name was spelled in this country until about a hundred years ago.

No, I don't think so. Look at Harriet Smith in Jane Austen's 'Emma', Harriet Tubman, etc. All spelled the usual way. I've never ever come across 'Harriette' and it seems wrong. Perhaps you are thinking of Henriette, French version of Henrietta?

I don't see how Harriette could be a European variation of Harriet either, as surely the British diminutive of Harry derived from Henry doesn't exist in other languages?

Good Lord.

No; I'm not thinking of 'Henriette' 🙄 and have already made the point that it seems curious to find 'Harriette' and 'Violetta' overblown when the name 'Henrietta' is acceptable.

Ok; maybe 200 years ago. Harriette Lacy was a fairly well-known actress of the 1800s, while Harriette Winslow was famous courtesan around the same time, I think. Maybe a bit earlier.

Harriet Tubman was American, btw.

I possibly missed out an 'or' - "alternative or European'. 'Harriette - alternative; Violetta - European'.

brushlaptop · 20/10/2021 10:41

Violetta

Pemba · 20/10/2021 10:48

The statement that 'Harriette was the usual spelling in this country a hundred years ago' (presuming 'this country' is the UK), is quite clearly untrue.

Aethelthryth · 20/10/2021 10:48

Harriet and Violet are both lovely. Adding French/Italian endings looks affected (unless French/Italian family). Kitty is a nice diminutive for Katharine. Sylvia is better than Sylvie (a bit twee). Maeve is ok. Don't like Maeva. Felicity is nice; but why shorten it? Flick is ugly

Cantstopthewaves · 20/10/2021 10:48

Katherine nn Kitty would be my choice.
Also like Sylvie.

Pemba · 20/10/2021 10:49

An unusual but known alternative spelling, maybe.

Viviennemary · 20/10/2021 10:51

Not personally keen on Harriet. Violet is lovely. I would drop the ette for both names. Its a bit pretentious.

LetHimHaveIt · 20/10/2021 10:54

Yes, you're right. Apologies. It certainly wasn't the favoured spelling. But it was a completely acceptable alternative spelling and not the least bit outré.
Classica · 20/10/2021 10:55

Harriette looks clunky. But I don't like the more usual Harriet either, think it's such a frumpy name.

Felicity and Sylvie are both lovely and would go well with your other daughter's name.

PyjamasOClock · 20/10/2021 11:02

Love Felicity and either Kathryn or Caitlin nn Kitty. Harriet is nice too, I'd only use the French/Italian spelling if you're bilingual/one of you is from there. Congratulations on your daughter and wishing you a safe delivery.
