Brother for Ivor - Otis or Jonah?

Ohbabymama · 18/10/2021 22:57

So we already have an Ivor (so no comments on that required cheers!Smile) and another baby boy on the way. I’d like Otis for the baby as I prefer slightly (but not too) unusual names & think this is on a par with Ivor whilst being totally different. But DH wants Jonah, what d’you think? We’re not religious so I’m slightly put off by how biblical it is and also that Ivor & Jonah kind of rhyme?? (Also couldn’t shorten Jonah to Joe as a NN as that’s their uncle’s name!) Thanks all!

LOVE Ivor, fab name, definitely with you so far. I’m sorry not fond of either two! That’s not much help to you. The biblical thing isn’t a biggie for me, I think I just find it a bit cheesy or something.

Ellmau · 18/10/2021 23:11

I think Otis works better with brother Ivor - agree with you re the semi-rhyming.

catfunk · 18/10/2021 23:21

Otis for me!

surlycurly · 18/10/2021 23:32

I Have a Jonah and no one ever mentions the religious link. And no one ever shortens his name. I love Otis too though, and think it matches Ivor slightly better.

ODFOgrinch · 18/10/2021 23:47

I think that Jonah us a better match than Otis.
Also a good fit for Ivor:
Hywel
Jonty
Percy
Hugh
Seth
Sean (or Shaun)
Gordon
Toby
Bryn

BeKindBeYou · 19/10/2021 07:20

I like Otis!

NoSquirrels · 19/10/2021 07:58

Ooh, love Jonah. (And Ivor!)

Don’t mind Otis, just has much more of an American vibe to me.

How about

Seth
Nate/Nathan
Owen
Ezra
Asa
Jude

daisypond · 19/10/2021 08:25

Otis.
I wouldn’t give a child a name that’s in the dictionary as an unpleasant word, like Jonah is.

SummaLuvin · 19/10/2021 09:09

Not hugely into Otis, but I find Jonah a very wish-washy name, it doesn't appeal to me at all, so Otis is my preference.

In terms of religious connection it definitely has a stronger connotation than other biblical names like John, Matthew, or Luke - I would wonder if Jonahs parents were religious. But it also isn't as strong as Isaiah or Emmanuel.

The Joe nickname could be an issue. As parents you could refer to him as Jonah only, but at school his friends may start to call him Joe, and there is nothing you can do about it, it's not inevitable but you can never guarantee it wouldn't happen. So if the match name with BIL is a problem for you I would avoid.

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 19/10/2021 12:48

Don’t choose Otis if it’s important for the name to be relatively unusual. It is on a steep upward trajectory at the moment (as is Jonah tbh, although less dramatically).

Maybe Josiah?

octoberfarm · 19/10/2021 13:05

I love Jonah!

Namechangedforthethousandthtim · 19/10/2021 13:55

If you don't want something religious sounding then I'd definitely not choose Jonah, and 100% not Josiah as per a PP's suggestion. I'd definitely assume a very religious family. If you want something rare, I'd not go for Otis either as agree it's getting much more popular. Ivor has a sort of European vibe, how about Rudy?

clarrylove · 19/10/2021 14:03

Wouldn't use Jonah due to the bad luck connotations. It is in common parlance in coastal areas, wonder if others haven't heard it used in this way?

DressedUpAtAnIvy · 19/10/2021 14:09

I love Ivor and love Jonah but somehow they don’t quite work together. I know several babies called Otis, if that’s a concern.
Jonas
Joel
Otto
Frank
Bernard
Ray
Elvis
Jed

Thanks everyone for your really helpful views!

Ok so how about:

Oren
Rufus (Ivor & I are readheads so there’s a good chance!)
Austen/Austen (Ostin?) - though I wouldn’t love ‘Aussie’ for short

OP posts:
Heruka · 19/10/2021 19:10

I like all of those last 3, much better imo. I’ve never heard Oren so think that would be one he’d need to spell out, but it has a nice sound. Like Rufus best, then Austen.

DressedUpAtAnIvy · 19/10/2021 20:17

Rufus is really nice.

lgfh07 · 19/10/2021 20:51

I love the name Otis 😃

NoSquirrels · 19/10/2021 20:53

Rufus is great! (Though if he doesn’t look redheaded and his brother is then it might be odd? But that’s in the realm of overthinking.)

Austin also excellent and not much used.

Not fussed on Oren, personally.

Others similar - Caleb, Asher, Aaron?

WeasilyPleased · 19/10/2021 21:47

Rufus is great!

Fivebeanchilli · 20/10/2021 08:24

I really like Otis but think it's too trendy and popular next to Ivor.
I also think Jonah is a bit rhymey with Ivor. I would go for Jonas as a mix between them and a much nicer name!
Rufus would be great though.

Dustingiseasy · 21/10/2021 21:39

Jonah is fab - I know regional accents change things, but I have no idea how that can rhyme with Ivor!

Beebababadabo · 21/10/2021 21:48

Otis just reminds me of a skin disease tbh, I would go with with Jonah

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 23/10/2021 22:23

I’ve been racking my brain but I give in. What skin disease sounds like Otis?
