Marsaili, testing waters

After endeavour having mixed responses, I’m curious about marsaili.

Bearing in mind I’m in Scotland. I went to school with a ciorstaidh, and she coped fine, so Gaelic names do not put me off.

You say it MAR sa lee.

Too much like masala, as in the curry.

CovidCorvid · 17/10/2021 09:40

I'm English, never heard of it but guessed the pronunciation correctly if that's a concern. Pretty name

DeireadhFomhair · 17/10/2021 09:42

Lovely name, you're in Scotland so I'm sure it's perfectly fine.
I know it from Outlander 😊

HoldingTheDoor · 17/10/2021 09:43

I really dislike it.

wombatsandadoor · 17/10/2021 09:43

I’ve never come across someone with the name before, I know it from a book,

Never heard of it before and would’ve pronounced it Mar Say Lee but it’s not exactly a tricky one to get your head around once you’re told.
I don’t love it generally but if you do, that’s what matters.

@MrsMoastyToasty

Too much like masala, as in the curry.
It's actually nothing like that if you pronounce it rather than just glance at the letters and make a random assumption Confused

Lovely and quite well known Scottish name - used in Outlander and the Peter May Lewis Trilogy so lots of exposure for non Scots

HoldingTheDoor · 17/10/2021 09:48

Lovely and quite well known Scottish name

I'll have to hand in my Scottish passport. I'd never heard the name before until about a year or so ago.

Ohhelppp · 17/10/2021 09:50

Like!

Hexagosaurus · 17/10/2021 09:52

Went to school with a Marsali. Remember she was a good hockey player, don’t remember thinking the name was unusual
Was also in Scotland

hollygoflightly · 17/10/2021 09:55

I'm Welsh, never heard it before, guessed the right pronunciation and I think it's really pretty

HHSchultz · 17/10/2021 09:58

I'm Scottish and know two with the name, one is 30 and the other late 50's. just remembered I did know an old woman with the name, she would be in her 90's now. I like it, but is there more than one spelling?

MyOtherProfile · 17/10/2021 09:58

It's ok, too close to masala for my liking, as someone said.

To be honest I'm more interested in knowing how you pronounce ciorstaidh.

hashbrownsandwich · 17/10/2021 09:58

@wombatsandadoor it's from Outlander. I like it!

I also like Merryn.

romdowa · 17/10/2021 09:58

I've never heard it before but I like it. I'm irish and love traditional Irish names but I am also finding Scottish names equally as beautiful.

XiCi · 17/10/2021 10:00

I quite like it - only know it from Outlander

Mamamia35 · 17/10/2021 10:06

My guess was Mar Sally and I'm Scottish. Are you ok with that pronunciation?

balernobetty · 17/10/2021 10:11

It's lovely op. Was on my list for my first DC but he was a boy

Yellow85 · 17/10/2021 10:15

I know someone called Marsailaidh. Spends her whole life telling people it’s like Parsley with the P.

ThirdElephant · 17/10/2021 10:21

I like it. I was concerned at first because I thought it'd be pronounced mar-sail-ee, but MAR-sa-lee is pretty, provided that sa is like salad, not marsala.

QueenDanu · 17/10/2021 10:23

I like it, but I'm Irish so I've heard it before (although I know it's Scottish).

MARsalee is lovely.

JamieFrasersSassenach · 17/10/2021 10:30

Love it! Possibly because I love the character in Outlander, but I also think it's a really 'pretty' name. Go for it OP

Splishsplashimhavingabath · 17/10/2021 10:30

I know of someone with a daughter called Marsaili I love it such a nice name

wombatsandadoor · 17/10/2021 10:34

Thanks guys, at least I’m not going completely left field.

I also really like Wednesday, after the Addams family lol.
