Hi,

Needing some help here. My husband is Polish and I am Scottish. We are having some difficulty agreeing on names but more so the spellings!

We don't know if we are having a boy or a girl yet and have the following names picked our: Leon, Natasza and Olivia I love Natasza but I want to spell it "Natasha" and he absolutely does not. Am I overthinking it that this would be a pain for others to try and spell? That it would make life somewhat difficult being a kid whose name is always misspelt? Also would love to hear others opinions on names that would work for both families.

Thanks in advance!

Leon is a great name. Not many and easy to spell.

I have a child with a well known traditional name that I spelt the French way. He says it always gets spelt incorrectly. It was useful at school though as there was another in class so it distinguished him and his work. Max would be another chose.
Natasha is a beautiful name. I don’t think it would be too much of a problem as it is only one letter different.
Congratulations! Are you going to bring the child up bi lingual? Please do I have worked with children that were and some went to Polish school on Saturday mornings. Might be multi lingual if you are Gaelic speaking. My sister’s children were.

Of they are being brought up in the U.K. - think about the double whammy of a ‘foreign’ surname (I assume) and ‘foreign’ spelling of the first name, and a lifetime of ‘where are you from?’, ‘when did you get here?’ (Oh ten mins ago, the bus was slow...) and my personal favourite ‘you speak very good English’ (yes, being a native speaker and having a degree of English would suggest some level of fluency). Grrrr.

My Polish friends use English spellings of their names here, and their kids have English spellings on their birth certificates, but use the polish spellings when they go to visit family.

But congratulations on the baby!

If I’m correct, Mina has both polish and Scottish roots, and is fairly straightforward

LuluF91 · 14/10/2021 17:24

@redsquirrel5 thanks! We already have one son and so far there aren't any words but he understands Polish!

@kittenKong that is exactly my worries regarding presumptions being made. I feel like most families here tend to use Polish names but stick with English spellings but my husband isn't very open to that.

Thankfully I think we have come to an agreement on "Mila" for a girl now. So close to Mina!

Mila is cute! I was brought up in Scotland and there were quite a few Polish families (from after the war). Always very well respected (well in our town anyway).

My great uncle was Poli, which sh and he was called Roman, which I think it's a great name and easy to spell in both (assuming he spelled it the Polish way...!)

Mandate · 14/10/2021 17:33

That's a bit garbled, he was Polish, and I think it's a great name...

Heruka · 14/10/2021 17:34

Mila is lovely Smile

VanillaAndOrange · 14/10/2021 18:50

i Thankfully I think we have come to an agreement on "Mila" for a girl now.

The funny thing about that is that if you just put a small line through the L, it would be the Polish word for "nice, friendly." I wonder if that is part of why he likes it. Having said that, I'm not Polish and I like it too.

TheVanguardSix · 14/10/2021 19:07

Kasia
Larisa
Justina
Maia
Amelia
Alina
Zosia

Marek
Kaspar
Piotr/Peter
Teodor
Tomasz

KirstenBlest · 14/10/2021 19:45

Watch with the Polish spellings.

Marek would be ok, but Piotr isn't great in an english accent - it becomes Pee-otruh. not Piotr

Tadeusz for some is well-nigh impossible to say because the 'eu 'bit has no english equivalent

toastofthetown · 14/10/2021 21:04

Most Polish people I know have given their children names which are pronounced easily in English. Maia, Liliana, Emilia etc. I’d pick the spelling which is common in the country the child will spend most time, as it makes it easier for them.

LuluF91 · 14/10/2021 21:37

All great suggestions (to me anyway) ! My husband is so fussy and has dismissed half of the names suggested 🙄 I'm glad we at least have one of each we are set on that translate well to both!
