Opinions welcome on the name Elle please, pronounced ‘Ell’ not ‘Ellie’. Short and sophisticated or do people just think of Legally Blonde?

Lovely and sophisticated

nocoolnamesleft · 13/10/2021 22:11

If you have to specify how a name is pronounced, then a lot of people will pronounce it wrong. (I've previously been told off by a parent for pronouncing Elle as Ell, as apparently I should have know it was Ellie)

TwinklyBranch · 13/10/2021 22:12

Yep, I think Legally Blonde. Or Elle magazine. It sounds like a nickname.

toastofthetown · 13/10/2021 22:13

I watched Legally Blonde last week and that’s a pretty good association! It’s pronoun in French. It’s well used enough as a name that I don’t think it’s a big deal, but might be something to consider.

DramaAlpaca · 13/10/2021 22:13

I think of the French word for 'she'.

It's not in the least bit sophisticated. Sorry.

LorenzoVonMatterhorn · 13/10/2021 22:14

This name drives me mad. It is Elle. ‘L.’ Not Ellie.

Classica · 13/10/2021 22:15

Legally Blonde, Elle McPherson, Elle magazine, 'she', the letter L

It's not awful but I don't think it's particularly sophisticated. There are a lot of Ellas around at the moment so she'd probably get called that quite often.

Comedycook · 13/10/2021 22:15

Love it. I have never seen Legally Blonde

Blankspace4 · 13/10/2021 22:16

I like it. But have you considered Eleanor, known as Elle?

Classica · 13/10/2021 22:18

I do like Legally Blonde though.

Kanaloa · 13/10/2021 22:18

It’s nice. I think most people would know that it’s El and not Ellie.

BananaPB · 13/10/2021 22:18

I think she'll be lumped with all the girls called Ellie and Ella. I don't think it's particularly sophisticated but it's not unsophisticated either.
I associate it with the French word for she, model, magazine, Legally Blonde. The movie is not a bad association imo

BeKindBeYou · 13/10/2021 22:18

I really like it.

RainbowMum11 · 13/10/2021 22:26

How about El as a shortened version of Eleanor or Elizabeth. No confusion then.

TheBugHouse · 13/10/2021 22:33

Very sweet and pretty

ILoveHulas · 14/10/2021 07:13

So many Ellies and Ellas around. People will assume it is short for a name starting with El.

How about Dee or Kay instead?

RuthW · 14/10/2021 07:43

Awful.

'elle's bells

EdgeOfACoin · 14/10/2021 13:31

I like Elle. Nicer than Ellie or Ella.

SherbertLemons · 14/10/2021 13:43

One of my favourite names. Unfortunately we have decided on "Evan" if our baby is a boy so we can't use Elle (say them together). However if we have a girl now and then a second daughter Elle will be her name. Go for it!

AnotherLauraLou · 14/10/2021 14:39

I really don’t like it, it’s like half a name.

LorenzoVonMatterhorn · 14/10/2021 16:19

@AnotherLauraLou

I really don’t like it, it’s like half a name.
I always think that about Demi.
purpleme12 · 14/10/2021 16:22

I think it's lovely

NailsNeedDoing · 14/10/2021 16:25

It makes me think of ‘ells angels.

I’m not keen, it sounds like the rest of the name is missing and it’s just a nickname. There are too many Ellie’s and Ella’s for it to be sophisticated.

TuftyMarmoset · 14/10/2021 16:29

@LorenzoVonMatterhorn Grin

I don't like it - I agree it sounds like it's missing something. Also not sure about using a pronoun as a name in today's world...

RubyReynolds64 · 14/10/2021 16:40

Thank you for everyone’s input; some of your comments did make me chuckle and has certainly given me food for thought. Perhaps I will go with a longer name that can be shortened sometimes to Elle as a nn. Thank you.
