How lovely, thank you OP. Interesting not to see names like Niamh and Aisling, but perhaps they are getting a little old fashioned. I would also have guessed that Fiadh would be here!

Genuine question - is Paige an Irish name? Or just popular in irish? I’ve always really liked it. Wouldn’t have thought of Peggy as a nn but also quite like that.

Is this an official list?

beans1992 · 10/10/2021 16:00

*popular in Ireland

LizzieAnt · 10/10/2021 17:16

Thanks OP, nice to see the Irish names.
Did you use the CSO website?
www.cso.ie/en/interactivezone/visualisationtools/babynamesofireland/

Are some fadas in the wrong places though?
For example, Róisín is listed three times with different numbers...
Róisín 146, also Róise 27, Rosa 23, Róisín 13, Róisín 9, and Roísín 3
It's the same story for Aoibhínn.

I'm avoiding making the dinner btwGrin

AuntDympna · 10/10/2021 17:23

I got the names off CSO. Those are the spellings. I think Roísín might be a typo.

Paige is an odd one. I think it is Maighréad gone through Peig but not sure, I thought would give it the benefit of the doubt.

No, I mean how can the number for Róisín be 146 and 13 and 9 in 2020? I think it's referring to number of babies born with the name rather than ranking...but how can there be three different numbers, with the exact same spelling, in one year? Sorry, I'm probably missing something really obvious, but it's confusing me.

AuntDympna · 10/10/2021 18:36

Sorry there were 146 Róisín (two fadas), 13 Roisin ( no fadas), and 9 Roisín (fada on i only) . I thought i had corrected them and my phone recorrected.

Fíadh should be between Cora and Croía.
Fìadh 57, Fia 19.

Ah thanks, I thought it would have something to do with fadas, though I was too lazy to look Grin
It's a very useful site. It graphs the usage of a particular name over the years too, which I find interesting (starts in 1964 I think). Only started including fadas and other diacritics in 2018 though!

AuntDympna · 10/10/2021 19:44

I was surprised by Ailbhe and Croía. Where did they come from?

OP posts:
LizzieAnt · 10/10/2021 20:19

Ailbhe has been quite popular now for the last 20 or 30 years or more, I know a couple. Mostly said as Al-veh, but sometimes as Ale-veh. It's an old name, used to be a male name , but now used for girls. Croía is new, afaik anyway. Croí is the Irish for heart.

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 10/10/2021 20:27

How do you say Croia? Sorry, can't do fada

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 10/10/2021 20:29

DD2’s name is on that list.

This is interesting. Thank you.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 10/10/2021 20:29

Just read it again. DD1’s name is on there too but with a different spelling.

LizzieAnt · 10/10/2021 20:38

Like Cree-a www.teanglann.ie/en/gram/cro%C3%AD
AuntDympna · 10/10/2021 22:02

Croíadh means hearty, courageous, I think.
Anther name that surprised me is Síomha, with 26 babies. I don't think I have heard it before. It's pretty.
