What is Elsie short for?

Hi!

I have always loved the name Elsie for a girl, my middle name and my partners grandmother is Elizabeth so we have always wanted Elsie Elizabeth if we were to have a girl.
However I have just read somewhere that Elsie is short for Elizabeth? 🙈 I have never heard this before, now I’m annoyed because we wouldn’t be able to use Elizabeth as a middle name if this is the case!!
Has anyone else ever heard of this??

I've always assumed it originated from a shortening for Elizabeth. You could always get round it by putting Elizabeth as her official first name but just introducing her as Elsie from day one?

swanswallow · 09/10/2021 12:33

Yes I'm sorry but Elsie is definitely short/related to Elizabeth. Apparently is short for Elspeth which is the Scottish version of Elizabeth.

Maybe Elizabeth know as Elsie?

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 09/10/2021 12:34

Or just call her Elsie Elizabeth. I wouldn't see it as that big a deal.

NoSquirrels · 09/10/2021 12:35

Call her Elizabeth nn Elsie.

TheDuchessOfMN · 09/10/2021 12:35

I always thought Elsie is a name in its own right. I think it’s lovely with Elizabeth

leavesthataregreen · 09/10/2021 12:36

Elsie is short for Elizabeth or Elspeth.

PitchImperfect · 09/10/2021 12:39

What about Elsie Beth? Keeps the Elsie bit but also references the Elizabeth.

dontblamemee · 09/10/2021 12:44

Yes my nana was Elsie Betty as an alternative to Elizabeth

dementedpixie · 09/10/2021 12:46

My mum is Elsie short for Elizabeth. Betty is also derived from Elizabeth

TuftyMarmoset · 09/10/2021 12:51

Imo it's short for Elizabeth or Elspeth (the Scottish version). I second the suggestion to call her Elizabeth nn Elsie.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 09/10/2021 12:53

Elsie can be short for Elizabeth or Elspeth but I still think Elsie Elizabeth is fine.

user1493494961 · 09/10/2021 12:58

I've always thought of Elsie as a name in its own right, perhaps it's a regional thing. I had an Auntie, born 1900, who was just Elsie, as was her friend. If you like Elsie Elizabeth then choose that, I don't think it matters.

prairiegirl81 · 09/10/2021 12:59

I've never heard that Elsie is short for Elizabeth so wouldn't think anything of the two names together.

I think Elsie Elizabeth is lovely. Go for it if you love it.

NigellaSeed · 09/10/2021 13:01

Remember there is a cricketer called Neville Neville. So if you want to call your baby Elsie Elizabeth you go for it

DramaAlpaca · 09/10/2021 13:03

Elsie is a diminutive of Elizabeth, and calling a child Elsie Elizabeth is a bit daft for that reason. It's similar to calling a boy Jacob James - while it might sound good, they are essentially the same name.

Elizabeth known as Elsie would be better, then she has the option of a less cutesy name in the future if she prefers it.

whichiswitch · 09/10/2021 13:03

Never heard it as being short for Elizabeth. Elsie Elizabeth is a lovely name

Ozberry · 09/10/2021 13:05

I’d just go with Elizabeth nn Elsie.

I had a similar conundrum with my son and so he has my dad’s ‘official’ name but his own nickname version.

Frazzled2207 · 09/10/2021 13:06

@NoSquirrels

Call her Elizabeth nn Elsie.
What i would do. Elsie very much sounds like a nn to me.
doglikescheeseontoast · 09/10/2021 13:07

My Nan was one of 13 children. One was Elsie, not short for anything, just her name ....

They all had lovely names.

BikeRunSki · 09/10/2021 13:08

My niece is known as Elsie, as a diminutive of Eleanor - Elle- Elsie

Grizzlydog · 09/10/2021 13:09

Elsie Elizabeth is lovely.

Awrite · 09/10/2021 13:14

Elsie Elizabeth is fine. Ignore the naysayers.

ErrolTheDragon · 09/10/2021 13:14

I had relatives called just Elsie. I suppose it was in fashion at the end of the 19th century and start of the 20th. One of them hated it, would much rather have been an Elizabeth, I think - it gives the person so much choice as to which form to use.

randomuseragain · 09/10/2021 13:15

How about Elise?

daisypond · 09/10/2021 13:17

Of course Elsie is short for Elizabeth. I thought it was common knowledge. You definitely can’t have Elsie Elizabeth. Call her Elizabeth or Elisabeth and use Elsie for short.
