For a girl although I’m aware it can be unisex?

Any thoughts?

I have a friend called Merryn. It's a lovely name. She told me St Merryn is a place in Cornwall.

It doesn't have to be spelt with a y though -
Merrin Williams is one of the central characters of the book/film Horns which Daniel Radcliffe starred in. But don't watch it now though - it's a horror and might put you off!

It would be pronounced Mer-ryn as far as I know? I literally just read it the way it’s spelt.

Never watched catastrophy, I’ll watch a bit before we decide Grin

It’s so difficult to find something unusual, not crazy, not a film character, easily spelt Blush running out of ideas!

It's a place in Cornwall near Padstow (St Merryn).

I quite like it though.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 08/10/2021 21:49

It was top of our list if DS had been a girl, and it's what we'll use if our next baby is a girl too, due in January!! I adore it!

WithASpider · 08/10/2021 21:53

Love it, I have one! Ours is spelt Merren though. (merr-en)

Good friends have a Merryn (Merr-in) named after ours.

Fivebeanchilli · 08/10/2021 22:00

I love it. I've only heard it for girls.

SoftSheen · 08/10/2021 22:02

Lovely

CormoranStrike · 08/10/2021 22:03

It’s nice.

I also love Mirrin.

Adventing · 08/10/2021 22:23

Love it. Unusual without being out there and strong but pretty

Thedogscollar · 08/10/2021 22:28

Beautiful name was my choice for a girl 21 years ago but I had a boy.

CornishTiger · 08/10/2021 22:30

Pretty standard name here for a female.

driftcompatible · 08/10/2021 22:33

Sounds too Tolkien for me. Could be the name of a hobbit.

TuftyMarmoset · 08/10/2021 22:38

I don't really like it. It's the name of a journalist whom I don't like, and I associate it with her.

HenPenJen1789 · 08/10/2021 22:42

I’m biased , I love it, I have a Merryn! A family friend has an 18year old Merryn, which is where we first heard the name. It comes from the village of St Merryn in Cornwall. Occasionally people have trouble spelling it, and she gets called Mary sometimes, but it’s not a big issue.

Laloo4 · 08/10/2021 22:46

Gorgeous!

TheSmallAssassin · 08/10/2021 22:54

@Passmeamenuatthetottenham

It's a place in Cornwall near Padstow (St Merryn).

I quite like it though.

But the place is named after a person, Saint Merryn (whom the parish church was dedicated to)
theflippantpenguin · 08/10/2021 23:12

It's a lovely name.

3luckystars · 08/10/2021 23:12

Love it!!

Mrsfenchurch · 08/10/2021 23:14

It’s a popular name in Cornwall. Lovely

LizzieAnt · 09/10/2021 00:22

Never watched catastrophe, I’ll watch a bit before we decide

I think the baby in Catastrophe was Muireann.

EdgeOfACoin · 09/10/2021 08:28

I knew a Merryn once. I thought it was a great name! Still do!

StormyCornishSeas · 09/10/2021 11:34

I know a couple, various ages.

Think after St Merryn. It's pronounced
Meh-rin not Mer-rin like Mermaid

meadowbleu · 09/10/2021 12:27

@CormoranStrike

It’s nice.

I also love Mirrin.

I wouldn't be able to get the Japanese rice wine out of my head (Mirin)
ChikiTIKI · 09/10/2021 12:36

Just posting again to say we sometimes have people thinking ours is called Marian or other similar names. Mil called her mirrin at first (like the rice wine) but think she was just trying to make some weird point... I also liked it because it sounds like a mix of Merry and Pippin (LOTR). We love the nickname merry, merry-bobs etc.
