To rhyme with 'layer' or ' payer'

Considering it but not sure. Don't like Thea

There was a Tayah in married at first sight and although she was a nice girl I couldn’t help thinking why her (lovely) mum gave her such a name.

WhenZoomWasJustAnIceLolly · 07/10/2021 20:07

I knew a Teyah. I prefer your spelling. I’m not 100% keen! Prefer Freya but there are a lot of them about.

BanditoShipman · 07/10/2021 20:11

Quite chav

Onlinedilema · 07/10/2021 21:44

Until MAFSUK I have only ever met one Taya- not spelt that way though.

alpinerain · 08/10/2021 07:41

I know of 2 Taya's. Ones a few months old and the other is probably around 13 or 14 now. I think it's a great name! Uncommon but easy to spell and pronounce.

EdgeOfTheSky · 08/10/2021 08:28

I like Tala.

WhenZoomWasJustAnIceLolly · 08/10/2021 08:35

The one I know definitely isn’t chav! She’s very posh! Her sisters have posh names!

wheresthehope · 08/10/2021 08:40

My step daughter is called Taya. Personally it wouldn’t be my choice but it doesn’t get mispronounced that I’ve heard.

Theoldwoman · 08/10/2021 08:49

My daughters best friend is Tayah (prefer this spelling)
My neighbours granddaughter is Taya.

I like the name.

elfran · 08/10/2021 08:53

Interesting that you said you don't like Thea, because where I'm from Thea is pronounced Taya (I believe it's French in origin so this is the original pronunciation, could be wrong though). Obviously the Thee-uh pronunciation is the norm here in the UK though.

I like Thea pronounced Taya but don't like Taya spelt like that (or Thea pronounced any other way)! 🤣 Sp sorry not much help.

Maybe Téa? Accent would be a pain, however.

daisypond · 08/10/2021 09:33

Taya doesn’t sound like layer to me.
I know a Téa, pronounced like Taya. She’s from an Italian background.
I would also assume the French pronunciation of Thea before Taya.
However, it’s fine.

IVflytrap · 08/10/2021 10:09

I think if I saw the name Taya written down, I would hesitantly pronounce it to rhyme with layer, but wouldn't be 100% certain that it shouldn't rhyme with higher. Like the Maya/Maya confusion, basically, although the other way round me for me: I assume Maya should rhyme with higher, but a lot of people default to it rhyming with layer. I can see this always being a bit of an issue with Taya. (Btw, before anyone complains, I'm aware this rhyming comparison only really works for English accents, but I'm tired and don't currently have the mental capacity to think up words that rhyme in Scottish/American/Canadian etc accents, sorry. OP seems to have a non-rhotic accent anyway.)

I prefer Talia or Rhea, which have some similar sounds but feel more established and classic. I also like Téa, but people miss off accents in this country quite a bit, and you couldn't be sure she wouldn't be called "tea" occasionally... Grin

To pps, Thea is Greek in origin, and pronounced a bit like Thaya (Greek and English both have the "th" sound). I quite like the French pronunciation, though, but think if you're in the UK, people will default to the British version.

Frazzled2207 · 08/10/2021 11:41

IMO Tayah would be pronounced roughy to rhyme with layer

Taya is more confusing. Could be above or like tie-a. See also Maya. Confusing.

Don't like either though, sorry.

It wouldn't have crosses my mind to pronounce it like you say. It sounds like Tah-ya to me.

Anyway... it sounds silly and made-up and I wouldn't use it.

emmathedilemma · 08/10/2021 12:27

I would say awful but then I've recently met one (young adult) and she's awesome so it's kind of changed my image of the name!

Rosesareyellow · 08/10/2021 12:39

My three year old loves making up names at the moment - this is something she would come up with.

TuftyMarmoset · 08/10/2021 12:45

It’s ok, I don’t dislike it but it’s a bit nothingy. It reminds me of vegan cheese brand Daiya.

BananaPB · 08/10/2021 12:51

I'd never guess it was to rhyme with layer. Taya looks like it rhymes with Kaya (Ka-ya)

I'd pick another spelling like Teyah

JaninaDuszejko · 08/10/2021 12:51

@Toottooot

Surely you need the R on the end or nobody will pronounce correctly. Awful either way.
Then you end up like the woman I know with the name 'Linder' whose parents presumably couldn't spell 'Linda'. Except she then got a job in Scotland where we pronounce the letter 'r'.
TuftyMarmoset · 08/10/2021 12:51

@elfran Thea is pronounced taya in German as well. Dorothea was quite popular for a while.

garlictwist · 08/10/2021 12:54

My sisters name is Thea but pronounced "Tay-ah" as my mum is Dutch.

Rosesareyellow · 08/10/2021 12:59

@TuftyMarmoset
It’s still not the same though, because the accent is so different. Many names sound better in other languages because of how they pronounce the vowels - especially the proper emphasis on the ‘a’ at the end which in English becomes a short and unimpressive ‘uh.’
