What do you think of this?
I've always loved this name and was worried my Moroccan husband wouldn't but luckily zaviyar is also an Arabic name and same meaning apparently so he's fine with it but it's not common either here or Morocco so I'm worried I'll look try hard.
Not sure how I'll spell it yet but baby not due till Jan so have plenty of time.
Do you think it sounds chavvy or pretentious and also any arabic speakers have you heard of zaviyar?

My youngest is called Xander and all the French side call him Khs-ander!!

But that's how the English pronounce it? Xander is Ale (Xander). Ksander?

It’s all very well telling English people it’s actually ksavee eh, but all that will achieve is their pronouncing Kiss a vee eh.The main sound is Z.

(I’m half French btw).

It’s a bit like Mathilde - which English people pronounce Muhtild. The a is more aa that uh and has a short -duh at the end (not as long as the English -da). And the German pronunciation renders -de full -da. But the English either say da or d.

Or Amélie, which is always rendered Amuhlee, whereas it’s actually Amehlee, & equal stress on all syllables.

@Perpetualmisery

I would spell it with a z as per the arab spelling but it seems its a different name to xavier anyway so it wouldn't matter. I think it's meant to be produced zah- vi- yaar...( this is the arab name NOT xavier) So really I guess I'm not even asking about xavier anymore Confused. I'm going to go back to the drawing board on this one. But thank you to everyone's help so far. I'm going to leave the thread before I get anymore confused Grin.
Don’t let this thread put you off, I think Zaviyar is great.

I think it's lovely.

Regardless of how you want people to pronounce it, please be aware that some will pronounce it as 'Chavvier'. That's because of the footballers Xavi Alonso and Xavi (he just goes by a single name). Barcelona had 'Messy and Chavvy' playing up front at one point.

So if someone does say 'Chavvier', don't be offended, they aren't taking the piss!
