Issue Confused?

NowEvenBetter · 29/09/2021 13:47

I own a nickname for a penis

MrsBungle · 29/09/2021 13:48

No, it sounds nice to me.

NowEvenBetter · 29/09/2021 13:49

Obviously if your first name is ‘I own a’ you need to be careful with the word that follows.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 29/09/2021 13:49

A bit heavy on “n” sounds but I’m not sure I’d realise that unless prompted to assess its merits. I love Iona as a first name.

piglet81 · 29/09/2021 13:50

@NowEvenBetter

I own a nickname for a penis
Isn’t that Johnson, rather than Johnston?

Our surname is a noun, so Iona was ruled out. I think it’s a lovely name though!

SilentPanic · 29/09/2021 13:50

Lovely name. It's pronounced Yonna in Wales.

Blubells · 29/09/2021 13:52

I own a nickname for a penis

Oh yes Grin

Is this a wind up?

Williamshatnershorses · 29/09/2021 13:53

Yes. We could not use Iona due to surname-related issues, which was a shame as I love it.

Stomacharmeleon · 29/09/2021 14:51

Um my DS is a nickname for a penis.
Named after the World Cup winning rugby captain.

SirChenjins · 29/09/2021 14:53

Don't call your child that! Shock

ofwarren · 29/09/2021 15:06

Johnston is too similar to Johnson so Iona Johnston sounds like "I own a penis".
Dont do it OP.

MimiDaisy11 · 29/09/2021 15:38

I wasn’t sure if I was overthinking it, given it’s American slang and it’s a slightly different surname/pronunciation, but I see enough people make the connection and so it’s sadly not to be. Shame as it’s a nice first name. My mum has mentioned it a few times too - don’t know if I can explain to her if we ever have a girl why we can’t go for it 😂

notsogreatnowboris · 29/09/2021 17:13

I liked it!
I didn't make the rude connection.
I like Iona.

MirandaBlu · 29/09/2021 19:01

Consider Ione? EYE-oh-nee. Eye like the body part + O like the letter + knee like, well, another body part. Means "violet flower" in Greek. Or Ianthe (eye-AN-thee), different spelling and pronunciation, roughly same meaning.

StarryStarrySocks · 29/09/2021 19:04

Is that you Carrie? Grin

NowEvenBetter · 30/09/2021 00:26

Iona Fox
Iona carpenter
Iona Cockburn
Iona rose
-do ye aye.

It’s a nice noise, but not a great name, imagine having to fake laugh at ‘you own a what’ for like 8 decades.
Johnson/Johnston=whatever, it’s the same thing.

CaffiSaliMali · 30/09/2021 08:50

Yeah if you use the 'Eye-oh-na' pronunciation it sounds a bit like 'I own a Johnson'.

Even if you used the Yonna pronunciation most people are more familiar with the 'Eye-oh-na' pronunciation anyway so it won't avoid the issue.

Williamshatnershorses · 30/09/2021 14:08

What about Isla instead? (I couldn’t use that either ☹️ Which turned out to be a bonus as there were 2 others in her class all the way through junior school)

lolabeex · 05/10/2021 23:31

I knew a Iona Heart

ladycarlotta · 06/10/2021 12:33

Given that it's Johnston not Johnson I don't see the problem.
But if you think it'll be a problem Ione is lovely, or maybe one of the other island names like Skye, Islay, Ailsa, or Cara. I'd probably draw the line at Benbecula.
