Myra

My partner and I are expecting a baby girl and we both like the name Myra. She would be named after my grandmother. My mother also used to listen to Myra Hess.

However, will the name cause some negative comments by older folk because of Myra Hindley who with her partner Ian Brady carried out the Moors Murders in the 1960s?

Myra was a common name in the UK years ago, but after 1966 when Hindley was convicted the popularity of it rapidly declined.

“In the early hours of the morning, Nellie gave birth to a healthy daughter whom she called Myra, a name that had been popular since the mid nineteenth century. A hundred years after it came into common usage, ‘Myra’ fell into sharp obscurity, a phenomenon entirely due to the deeds of the girl born that stifling night in the red-brick Victorian building in north Manchester.”

Carol Ann Lee, One of Your Own: The Life and Death of Myra Hindley

Mumsnet was mentioned in another book about the name Myra.

“A telling example of the vehemence and longevity public hatred of Myra Hindley is the following: the girl’s name “Myra,” relatively common in England prior to 1966, declined sharply in popularity thereafter. Such is the continuing infamy associated with the case that in 2008, on the well-known website for parents www.mumsnet.com, a thread was devoted to the topic: “I love the name Myra but does it have too many negative connotations?” The majority of the 75 responses said that the name was still too intimately linked to Hindley to be an appropriate choice for a new baby.”

Lisa Downing, The Subject of Murder: Gender, Exceptionality, and the Modern Killer, page 217.

There are few other lesser known Myras. Samantha Fox’s former partner was named Myra, Gok Wan’s mother is named Myra, etc. There’s also a Myra in Hollyoaks.

Although Myra was a common name prior to the 1960s, because there weren’t many famous people with the name, after Hindley gained press attention and was convicted, the name became associated with her which is why fewer babies were named Myra after the 1960s.

But it’s now the 2020s and we both love the sound of the name and it’s a name that has a family connection.

What does everyone think?

Sorry OP- you can guess what my first thought was…

spiderlight · 23/09/2021 16:47

I had a lovely, lovely Auntie Myra as a child (a close friend of my mum's), but even she can't fully dilute the immediate thought of 'Hindley', sorry.

Lyra is beautiful though, or Lara. Similar sounds, but not tainted by dark associations.

EmergencyPoncho · 23/09/2021 16:47

My friend's mum, who would have been born long before Hindley gained notoriety, is called Myra and I always feel a little awkward when I hear the name. It's nice, so it's a shame.

user147856 · 23/09/2021 16:47

No, sorry, it's still not long enough ago for people to not make the instant automatic association.

Did your grandmother have a middle name you could use instead?

Passmeamenuatthetottenham · 23/09/2021 16:48

Hindley.

It would be very unfair to put that on your kid.

Comedycook · 23/09/2021 16:48

Objectively, Myra is a nice name. If it wasn't for Myra Hindley I think it would be a popular name nowadays. Unfortunately, I really don't think you can call your child Myra...just no. Although it's weird isn't it? Rose West doesn't put anyone off calling their child Rose does it?

RonniePickering · 23/09/2021 16:51

Haha Handsoffstrikesagain the plonker obviously didn’t put people off the name, I know a few baby Ronnies 😂

NigellaSeed · 23/09/2021 16:51

Lyra, Moira, Maya etc don't name your child Myra

BingBongToTheMoon · 23/09/2021 16:54

Definitely Hindley.
How about it’s origin…..Mary?

Innovationstandard · 23/09/2021 16:57

Yeah Myra Hindley here too, you just can't

Joystir59 · 23/09/2021 16:58

Hindley. Instantly and always, sorry.

Extraslice · 23/09/2021 16:58

Thought Hindley when I read the title, sorry. I’m early 30s

AmberLynn1536 · 23/09/2021 16:58

Of all the names why would you want to call your child the same name as a notorious child killer, it’s not as if the name is generic enough like Rose, Fred or Ian, Myra is rare hence the problem it’s immediately associated with Hindley, don’t do it.

Antinerak · 23/09/2021 16:59

Early 20s, my second thought was Hindley. It would be a lovely idea to start a new generation of the name Myra but you would need to be prepared for the negative reactions. It's sad that her name still bothers people, but names like Ian, Harold and Fred don't have such negative connotations.

Perhaps it would work as a middle name? Or a different spelling- Mira? Mara or Mera

HoldingTheDoor · 23/09/2021 17:00

I'd immediately think of Myra Hindley. I wouldn't use it. I think it's going to be tainted for some time yet. You might perhaps be able to use it as a middle name but not as a first.

Famousfrays · 23/09/2021 17:02

Early 20’s and I think of Hindley. But I do think Myra is a nice name.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 23/09/2021 17:05

Yep I think of Hindley, lyra is a beautiful name though!

Mamascoven · 23/09/2021 17:06

Immediate thought was Hindley, sorry. Myla is lovely though.

ThePlumVan · 23/09/2021 17:10

As soon as I saw your title I thought it was about Hindley, sorry.

Still your choice though, and if I knew you in RL and met your little one, it would soon be her I thought of.

Maybe it’s time the connection to the name was buried with her.

JessCat75 · 23/09/2021 17:19

Could you use Moira instead, pronounced Moy-ra

Lobelian · 23/09/2021 17:20

Sorry, but another voice saying no.

I've got a slightly unusual/hard to spell surname, and am always being asked, 'As in Famous Actress?' when clarifying spelling over the phone. She'd inevitably get, 'As in Hindley?' which would be pretty depressing.

Bagelsandbrie · 23/09/2021 17:22

Hindley.

worrybutterfly · 23/09/2021 17:23

31 and my first thought was Hindley too.

Sorry, it's a lovely name but just has such bad associations.

JoborPlay · 23/09/2021 17:23

It's a beautiful name, I genuinely lobe it. But it just makes you think "hindley". I wish it didn't.

Onehotmess · 23/09/2021 17:24

You say Myra- you hear Hindley. What about Myla?
