Baby boys name: Rowan or Morrison

I would love some help deciding on a name for our first child (boy). We both really like the name Rowan, however I really love Morrison and think the nn. Morris is really cute. Our last name is Hall, so it would be either:
Rowan Hall
Morrison Hall

Rowan.

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 21/09/2021 12:50

Not Morrison - Morris is passable but Morrison just says supermarket to me. Rowan is nice.

freelions · 21/09/2021 12:50

Rowan... by a mile

Morrison is a surname

Brollywasntneededafterall · 21/09/2021 12:51

I have a Roan. No emphasis on a 'w' in pronunciation!
Prefer Rowan for a girl.
Morrison is a bit too oldy for me!!
And a shop!!

Lockdownbear · 21/09/2021 12:53

Why not just go for Morris? It is a name in its own right, Morris Hall sounds OK.

It's a good solid name, only heard it in the older generation but probably due a come back.

StevieNix · 21/09/2021 13:13

Morrison just shouts supermarket, like calling your child Tesco
Why not just go Moris if you like it, Moris Hall sounds fine!

user147856 · 21/09/2021 13:29

Rowan as per pps.

In the UK, Morrison is supermarket. it also means 'son of Morris' - so Morris is not the nickname, it is the origin.

So calling your DS Morris is totally fine also (I remember liking the name on the ER character, but since then have encountered pets with the name).

Zarene · 21/09/2021 13:30

Rowan out of those two.Not Morrison as it is far too supermarket-y.

I like Rowan as a name, but Rowan Hall does sound a bit like a stately home. I wonder if you'd be better with a name which isn't also a noun?

Blubells · 21/09/2021 13:33

Morris or Maurice

HoldingTheDoor · 21/09/2021 13:36

Rowan is lovely. Morrison is awful.

Lockdownbear · 21/09/2021 13:36

I prefer the Morris spelling, easier to read and spell.

user147856 · 21/09/2021 13:38

Yes, I like the spelling Maurice also. Though it does make me sound it out in my head in the silly Lou Reed (?) manner

Veeeeeeeee · 21/09/2021 13:44

Morrison! Hell no. My auto correct just changed it to 'Morrisinghs' Confused

Rowan is a perfectly ordinary name.

My surname is also Hall. I'd suggest a longer name for a first name as Hall can sometimes just sound like a noise when you say it. It's easy for people to mishear.

blairresignationjam · 21/09/2021 13:46

Morrisons is a grocery store. Go with Rowan

Bimblybomeyelash · 21/09/2021 13:47

Rowan a million times over. Morrison is not good.

Dipsydoodlenoodle · 21/09/2021 13:50

Rowan is my vote - it's top of my boy list :D

VippingQ · 21/09/2021 13:52

Are you a fan of the Wicker Man?

bloominglovelyorange · 21/09/2021 15:54

@Dipsydoodlenoodle ah that's nice - Rowan is my baby girl's name

It just depends what type of name you want OP @Maarr

Rowan is obviously increasingly popular and rising fast up the top 100 if popularity is a factor. Roman with an M is the fastest rising boy name 📈 so there is a lot of Roman and Rowan's babies about during the last couple of years - my baby girl called Rowan continually gets misheard for Roman. Names like Rory and Ronnie and Robyn are very popular these days too so it can get confusing when you have quite a few in a class at nursery! Rowan also gets shortened to Row even when you ask people not to. Depends if that bothers you; can you tell it bothers me!
Morrison is obviously much less commonly used than Rowan. If you look at the official statistics and add the Rowan and Romans each year in England and Wales there's over 2,000 Rowan and Romans born each year but less than 3 Morrisons
I personally prefer Morris to Morrison, Morrison reminds me of supermarket. How about Harris?

wingsofabird · 21/09/2021 16:04

ha ha "Rowan Hall" does sound like some sort of home or community centre

There is an actress called Rowan Hall, she's a girl so I'd maybe avoid the name for that reason in case she gets well known. I prefer Rowan for a girl but find the name really overdone these days for girls and boys and yes too many RoMans these days unfortunately. trendy. will date.

Morrison is not great though. I'd maybe go back to drawing board?

LynnInAVan · 21/09/2021 16:06

Oooooo wicker man!

DramaAlpaca · 21/09/2021 20:18

Leaving aside the supermarket association, Morrison Hall sounds like a stately home.

Rowan Hall is much better.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 21/09/2021 20:29

Rowan is lovely - it just happens to be rising in popularity but it's still a nice name.

Morrison is not my taste (feels like all the trendy Harrisons, Jacksons, Masons, Jensons...). Really dislike nn Morris though, sorry - it sounds just like Maurice and the ones I know of those are 70 plus so too "old man" for me.

Though I think with a surname like Hall you might be better avoiding nature names or surnames as given names as otherwise he does risk sounding like the name of a building.

TaraR2020 · 21/09/2021 20:31

you can't name your child after a supermarket

Don't do this to them! Lol
