Help me come up with a nickname for a difficult-to-pronounce Scandinavian name

My daughter's name is Mette which is pronounced Meh-deh.

We relocated to the United Kingdom a while ago and have yet to meet anyone who's been able to pronounce her name correctly, hence the need for a nickname.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Please stick with Mette!

It's a beautiful name that reflects your heritage. I know a Norwegian Mette and it's honestly very easy to pronounce her name Meh deh.

Definitely don't call her Maddie (sounds mad 😡) Mette is much nicer imo.

LowlandLucky · 20/09/2021 20:24

Merrie

WoozySnoozy · 20/09/2021 20:33

Meh

SlidDownTheElephantsTrunk · 20/09/2021 20:50

It's her name and other people will have to get used to it. Don't use a forced nickname.

I've just found out someone I've know are 'Mary' for 20 years has a completely different name and used an 'English' name to help others with the pronounceation. Her name is so beautiful!

Alonelonelylonersbadidea · 20/09/2021 21:00

Mette is categorically not difficult to pronounce- English speakers aren't idiots. They just don't know how to pronounce it. Tell them and they will do it correctly.

AnnaMagnani · 20/09/2021 21:04

I know this is defeatist but I have a Scandinavian name, as does my DM and we answer to the wrong names.

At school I could get everyone to pronounce my name correctly but after that, no chance.

So I would say she has a good chance of enforcing it by repetition in her class at school (she won't be the only one who has to teach their name anyway) but after that, be prepared for life as either Metta or Mett, with a few honourable people making the effort to learn it properly - those people I salute you and please know you are valued.

It could be worse, mine is unspellable by English people and my DM's sounds dreadful when English people read it off the page.

C8H10N4O2 · 20/09/2021 21:13

It really isn't that difficult - people who are too rude to remember the pronunciation of an easy to learn name are just as likely to make little effort with a common English name. That can be helpful in knowing who merits your time and attention.

Stick to your name, remind people how to pronounce it, give a degree of slack whilst they learn it. Then divide into goats and sheep accordingly Wink

EishetChayil · 20/09/2021 22:17

Just tell people how it's pronounced.

NotAnotherPushyMum · 20/09/2021 22:28

I’d go for Em.

PenOrPencil · 20/09/2021 22:37

As many others have already said, Mette is not hard to pronounce, it just takes a little bit of practice and repetition.

hejdu · 20/09/2021 23:03

@EishetChayil

Just tell people how it's pronounced.
If it was that easy, I wouldn’t be asking for nickname suggestions.

The vast majority still get my daughter’s name wrong after being explained the correct pronunciation – they struggle with the T being pronounced as D and they can’t get their mouth around the second vowel so it often ends up being pronounced as “Meh-tah” or “Meh-thi” which she hates.

Could you call her Medi as a nn? Before anyone starts ripping it to shreds, it is a real name.

KirstenBlest · 20/09/2021 23:44

It's more usual as a middle name and is pronounced Meddy.

LanisHouseLot · 20/09/2021 23:49

Focussing on the d sound, maybe Didi (deedee).

You want something that people understand straight away don't you? No good having a nickname you also have to repeat 3 times and then spell out before anyone understands what it is!

gleegeek · 20/09/2021 23:53

Didi is so cute! Does it sound like a good approximation of the correct pronunciation of her beautiful name though?
I quite like Em!

PermanentTemporary · 20/09/2021 23:54

Didi is lovely.

KirstenBlest · 20/09/2021 23:55

Not Didi. I think is means nipple in french slang

BrutusMcDogface · 21/09/2021 00:03

Meadow? I know it’s completely different but it had a lot of the same sounds, and is an acceptable (actually quite pretty) name for a girl.

DellaPorter · 21/09/2021 00:13

Maida?

MrsFin · 21/09/2021 00:15

Medi?

Blueroses99 · 21/09/2021 00:16

Does she have a middle name that could inspire a nickname?

The name Bette would be pronounced Bet or Betty so I can see why confusion arises from Mette in English.

FoxgloveSummers · 21/09/2021 00:20

I was going to suggest Meadow as well - most of the same sounds as (I imagine) the right pronunciation to be, except the final vowel sound?

Maddie/Maddy might be nice too. How old is your daughter?

Mandatorymongoose · 21/09/2021 01:59

The English equivalent would be Margaret I think? So could go with a diminutive of that if you wanted something very different from her name, more of a nickname. Daisy or Pearl? Even Meg?

Or I quite like Emi as a longer version of M.

Although honestly her name is lovely and I know lots of children with much more challenging names to pronounce.

spicedappledonuts · 21/09/2021 02:29

May
Maddie
Meg
Mia

Or let her be called Metty.

ChristmasPlannier · 21/09/2021 03:19

The 4 year olds I know make a greater effort with Nantes than many adults! I think it's because they listen & copy as opposed to focus on the spelling.
