Girl's name - help!

We are due a little girl soon and DH and I are really struggling to choose a name for her.

Names that I like are: Isobel, Florence, Ottilie, Matilda, Evelyn, Madeleine, Clara, and Ada. DH has vetoed all of them, other than Florence (which he says he might come round to).

He is still thinking about names that he likes, but I think he likes "simpler" traditional names (like Alice, although we already have a niece with that name).

On a further think, I have also considered Emmeline, Sophia, Harriet and Felicity, which I quite like and might be more up DH's street.

In short, I really like traditional yet pretty names, ideally that can be shortened with a nice nickname. For context, we already have a DS named Frederick (but currently known as Freddie).

Any good ideas?

So you both like Florence.

Have you suggested your other ideas to your husband? What does he think?

Would personally avoid Ottilie as that’s the name of Zoe Sugg’s new baby but your other options are all lovely!

Of your names I think Matilda ‘goes’ best with Frederick.

If you go for Florence then that is very matchy-matchy with Frederick and so potential #3 (#4! #5! etc) will either be excluded from that or you have to continue with the F theme. Same with Felicity.

Sophia is very popular at the moment if that’s something that might concern you.

Harriet and Emmeline are both very nice indeed.

Not Florence then or you'll be an advert for T*sco clothes

I'd go with Alice. Lovely name I would have gladly called my DD.

Wole · 13/09/2021 18:47

Yeah I'd avoid Florence with Freddie.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. Sadly, I think I have to agree on using Florence - we don’t want to sound like we’re a walking Tesco advert! I like Clementine and Flora.

I'm following this as we have such similar taste in girls names. I'm also nervous about using Florence (even though I love it) as my daughter called her guinea pig Florence and I don't know if I can steal it 😂
