Ailsa or Elsa

Think we have narrowed down to either of these very similar names. I know they are very similar and it’s just deciding if one spelling/pronunciation would be better than the other?

I am aware an Elsa will probably get frozen references Blush so in this case would Ailsa be a better option?

Which do you prefer?

I think I prefer Alisa to Elsa. But you can vary it too e.g Elisia, Elisa, Alyssa, etc

someonesomewhere7 · 08/09/2021 17:24

Neither. Elsa is too Frozen-ish and Ailsa sounds made-up/misspelled.

How about Alyssa/Elise?

magicalmama · 08/09/2021 18:15

I prefer Ailsa.

Elsa just seems like a misspelling of Ailsa to me. But I'm aware it's a very popular spelling too, especially since Frozen.

IVflytrap · 08/09/2021 18:28

Ailsa, definitely. I prefer it to Elsa, anyway, but using it over Elsa should reduce the number of Frozen references. Wink

Ailsa

Camandmitch · 08/09/2021 18:50

Elsa is a lovely name but imagine how many times she'll be told to 'let it go' growing up!

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 08/09/2021 18:52

Ailsa isn't uncommon in Scotland but not super common. Not made up

Nice name. So is Elsa, but, yeah, post Frozen it's out.

Ailsa, but I'm Scottish so it's not uncommon here.

Wrennie24 · 08/09/2021 18:58

Ailsa is lovely. Traditional Scottish name although not too commonly used.

Maneandfeathers · 08/09/2021 19:01

I know a few Ailsas in real life and as far aware it’s a traditional Scottish name.
We have a Scottish surname.

I loved Elsa originally as we have connections to a German relative named Elsa who was lovely.
I had a wobble about the whole frozen thing but then thought about how many other people are named after TV characters that weren’t names originally. At least Elsa is an actual traditional name!

I don’t like Alyssa or Elsie, not sure why!

Ailsa, it's really lovely and much nicer than Elsa. It's not that common in England either, I've only ever met one.

toastofthetown · 08/09/2021 21:03

I much prefer Elsa. It has an elegant simplicity that Ailsa doesn't for me (this could well be biassed from working with a very lazy Ailsa).

Velveteena · 08/09/2021 23:17

Elsa by a million miles. So much more elegant looking.

Ailsa was the woman in Home and Away who had a mullet and a hamburger phone.

Whichever you pick they'll get Frozen references anyway, which I wouldn't see as being a massive deal. The difference in sound between the two is not that great to the casual listener.

I only think of the one in home and away! Showing my age

Elsa was top of my list but had a boy and that was just before frozen. Lucky escape.
When I mentioned Elsa to my mum she was horrified as she felt it was “what you call a Lion”.
She’s thinking of Born Free. I don’t think that’s a bad thing at all but the far more recent frozen connection puts me off sadly. Nice name tho.

Ailsa is Scottish not made up! Alyssa always looks like a modern jumble of several names to me.

@Velveteena OMG that hamburger phone! Well remembered Grin

I love the name Elsa. Frozen is a big thing now but it won’t be forever.

My first thought was home and away too. Bad perm as well. Married to Alf.
Theoldwoman · 09/09/2021 01:43

Ailsa by a million per cent.

bettythebutterfly · 09/09/2021 02:25

What about Ilse?

user1493494961 · 09/09/2021 16:45

I would choose Ailsa.
