Using the same name for two children?

Hello!

So with my son if he was a girl he would've been Aurora. However, he was not so the nickname I'd always loved and envisioned using for Aurora was Rory. I gave my son the middle name of Rory as should I not have another child I wanted it in there somewhere!

...I am now pregnant with a baby girl and I still love the name Aurora however due to wanting to use the nickname Rory I'm apprehensive about using the name Aurora as I think it's a bit weird using effectively my sons middle name for my girls first name. It is however a name I've been in love with for 6 years and my partner still wants to use the name Aurora and we can't seem to agree on any other names!

HELP!

I think it’s fine! People use parents names as children’s middle names all the time, people hardly ever refer to middle names. I hadn’t really thought of Rory as a shortening for Aurora, it is lovely either way.

SilverConvention · 07/09/2021 13:08

I think it's absolutely lovely. Do it.

What middle name will she have?

LittleGwyneth · 07/09/2021 13:15

It's lovely - and I don't understand how people think Rory isn't a natural nn for Aurora.

annacondom · 07/09/2021 13:27

I know someone whose dd is Aurora. I think it's beautiful and you should use it. Your ds's middle name won't be used much.

Rainbowsew · 07/09/2021 13:34

Call her Aurora, it's a lovely name.

I wouldn't use Rory as a nickname, partly because of her brother's name but also I don't like it for a girl. Daftly though I could see me saying Rora as a shortened version!

See what nicknames happen naturally, you could fall into something completely different.

What about Dora? As in she's adorable 😊

GrandmaSteglitszch · 07/09/2021 17:29

Rora is lots better!

My grandad was one of 12, all called Gordon. Even the girls.
I want to know more about this too Grin

Alice909 · 07/09/2021 21:23

My parents didn’t like many boys names so my twin brother is Thomas Robert and my youngest (out of 3) is Robert James

PeterPomegranate · 07/09/2021 21:29

@MySixEggs

It's a bit like naming your daughter Annabella and calling her Jim.

Yes, I do agree with this, hard as it is to hear.

I don’t think it’s as bad as that! More like naming your daughter Annabella and calling her Billy?

But I think having a daughter called Aurora and a brother with Rory as a middle name is absolutely fine! Even if you end up using the nickname Rory (which you may not - I have ended up calling my son a different nick name than I would have expected).

@vampirethriller

My grandad was one of 12, all called Gordon. Even the girls. So I think you're fine!
My Grandad was a Gordan, so that has just made me smile!

OP go for it, middle names aren't overly used, and do most people may not even know, and if they do, they shouldn't care.

WishMyNameWasWittyNotShitty · 07/09/2021 21:35

Gordon*

WellTidy · 07/09/2021 21:40

I hope she is able to pronounce her ‘R’s. Aurora is really hard if you can’t!

sarah13xx · 07/09/2021 23:23

Middle names are never mentioned after the birth announcement. If it’s the name you love, use it!

PollyRae16 · 09/09/2021 19:43

My cousins little girl is Aurora and Rory for short. Really suits her 🥰

AFewScrewsLucy · 09/09/2021 20:11

I know identical twins called Isabella and Isabelle.
You're fine

DramaAlpaca · 09/09/2021 20:17

Rory is ridiculous on a girl. It's a strong, Irish male name meaning 'red king'.

mogtheexcellent · 09/09/2021 20:21

Kate and wills did this with Louis (one of georges middle names).

I would use it.

ChristmasJumpers · 09/09/2021 22:15

OP I love Rory for a girl and for the same reason as you. If it wasn't for the fact that Aurora is horrid in my local accent, it would be on my list for a girl too.

Then again I also like Persephone, nickname percy 😉

Gem180786 · 27/10/2021 16:33

I absolutely love that name if I had another daughter I would call her Aurora why not call her Aurora and call her Aura as a nickname pronounced Ora xx

Yerra · 27/10/2021 16:59

My middle name is my sister's first name

Lalliella · 28/10/2021 00:36

Aurora is really pretty. Please don’t call her Rory.

DemBonesDemBones · 28/10/2021 00:52

I love Rory as a nickname, and I think you'd regret not using it. Grin

GeorgiaGirl52 · 28/10/2021 01:05

Had a friend from school - First child DS1 was called "Stephen Edward" and four years later DS2 was born. Called "Edward Stephen". She said she used up all the good names on the first one and couldn't think of any others!Confused

PaolaDiLorenzo · 28/10/2021 01:13

It's a lovely name and I like Rory for short. I immediately thought of Gilmore Girls.
My SIL used her DD1's middle name for her DD2's first name.
