If you have or know an Alexander, what is he most often called?

Help! One names on my list for DS is Alexander. But we already have an Alex in the extended family (I have a huge family so a lot of the classic or popular boys names are already used). It's not a close family member/someone we see regularly and I prefer the full name or Xan/Xand as a nn anyway.

BUT in your experience are Alexanders nearly always known as Alex?

Al (21 yo)
Alex (19 & 44yo)

hiredandsqueak · 06/09/2021 17:45

One Alex, one Xander and one Alexander.

Thanks for some more replies, much appreciated again Flowers . It does seem like Alex tends to be the go to nn (in England/Wales at least, which is what I'd guessed) but that I could probably push for another nn if I introduced it from day one/that's what he wanted himself at school. Really interesting to see a couple of you know a Xan!

In your situation if his name is causing so much angst do you think you might not be better off using a different one?

I completely see your point but my problem is I seem to have a naturally very classic/timeless naming style and many of them have been used already in my large family (George, Henry, Jacob, Mark, John/Jack, Robert, Thomas, Frederick, Peter, Joseph, Benjamin, James, Theodore, Owen, Daniel, Luke, Christopher...) and some of the ones that haven't, I'm not sure they sound great with my surname.

....Or I'm being a fussy so and so like with Alexander and like the full version but not the most common nickname eg. Edward (don't like Ed/Eddie/Teddy, prefer Ned), Nathaniel (don't like Nate, prefer Han), Matthew (don't like Matt). I'm awkward, I know! Grin

Is Xan pronounced Zan or Zarn?

I so nearly went with Alexander because I adore Xander but just wasn’t sure it would stick as Alex is so much easier. He got it as a middle name instead,

JaninaDuszejko · 06/09/2021 18:45

don't like Ed/Eddie/Teddy, prefer Ned

Ned means 'non educated delinquent' in Scotland.

Is Xan pronounced Zan or Zarn?

Where I live it will most likely be "Zan" as most people seem to say "Ale -zan- der" - although I do have a soft spot for Pointless "Ale- zarn -der" Armstrong so it wouldn't bother me if people did pronounce it "Zarn".

One Ali/ Alex and one Xander

santabetterwashhishands · 06/09/2021 18:52

My partner
Everyone calls him Alex and I call him Al but he does like it when people call him Alexander and that's what he introduces himself as 🤷‍♀️

peoniesandpastels · 06/09/2021 18:53

A few Alexes, one Ali and one Xander.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 06/09/2021 18:54

Ned means 'non educated delinquent' in Scotland.

I'm in Wales, but yes thanks, it could be an issue if he moves there when older which is one of the reasons I've taken Edward off my ever shrinking list (although he could be the full "Edward" if that happened - I wouldn't use Ned as a given name, as much as I like it).

Definitely Ali or Sandy here or sometimes Lex

purplecorkheart · 06/09/2021 18:57

Alex at their own request.

Bimblybomeyelash · 06/09/2021 19:00

I’ve known lots of Al’s, and then several Alex’s, a couple of ‘Xanders and one Sandy and one Ali. Lots of nn potential in Alexander!

Bimblybomeyelash · 06/09/2021 19:01

Oh yes and I have known an Alec.

Guineapigbridge · 06/09/2021 19:03

Lex (10)
Alexander (teen, and only because his mum absolutely insists that no-one deviates from her preference)
Alex (40s)
Sandy (70s, Scottish)

SquirmOfEels · 06/09/2021 19:09

Alex is the most frequent shortening I've come across, runner up is Sasha.

Xander is my favourite shortening (know 2) plus one each of Al and Sandy. (Only Alec is Gilroy -classic Corrie)

VerbenaGirl · 06/09/2021 19:12

The one I know is Alex. I Like Xander though.

whatthejiggeries · 06/09/2021 19:17

If you call them a shortened version that's what they will be called. I have an Alexandra we decided she will be Lexie everyone calls her Lexie or lex

Fernando072020 · 06/09/2021 19:18

DS is Alexander. It's really 50/50 between Alexander and Alex what others call him. DH and I mostly use Alexander, but so many just say Alex, often not asking us if he's called that. Some have checked with us if it's ok though which was nice. My mum sometimes calls him Alec though!

mafted · 06/09/2021 19:35

One Alex and one Leccy because he's and electrician

MostlyNormalSometimesOdd · 06/09/2021 19:43

Alexander would be Alec or Sandy in the North East of Scotland

ProfYaffle · 06/09/2021 19:46

Sasha (family with Russian heritage)

blueskytoday06 · 06/09/2021 19:47

Alex

CallMeNutribullet · 06/09/2021 19:49

The Alexander I know is in his 30s and known as Xander

MrsLargeEmbodied · 06/09/2021 19:55
