Lois?

I've seen Lois mentioned a couple of times recently and I actually really like it - what do you think?

I'm thinking of Lois pronounced 'Low-is', rather than the Welsh version, which is 'Loyce' (I think?)

Don't like Lois, no. Used to know one i didn't like.

CustardGoodJamGoodMeatGood · 25/08/2021 21:23

I have Family Guy on at the moment and the name just reminds me of that, it would be a nice name but FG is all I think of

Moonshine5 · 25/08/2021 21:24

It's a yes from me

Toddlerteaplease · 25/08/2021 21:26

I love it. We had a Loud on my arc for ages. She was such a character, we loved her. Though doctors calling her Lewis drove us up the wall.

Toddlerteaplease · 25/08/2021 21:27

Lois on my ward*

Foxmylife · 25/08/2021 21:31

Love

peaceinourtime · 25/08/2021 21:39

I love it, its definitely due for a revival. Go for for it.

ThinkIveFoundYourMarbles · 25/08/2021 21:43

I think it's a biblical name? I've known lots and they've all been from very Christian families.

Tulips15 · 25/08/2021 21:43

@Papergirl1968

I work with a Lois and I knew one as a child. I know a Lowri (pronounced Lourie as in loud) which I also like.
lowri turner pronounces her name the way you've said but in Wales it is "Low-ree' ( low as in a 'Low height')
ChocolateRiver · 25/08/2021 21:51

I really like it. We almost used it for dd.

annacondom · 25/08/2021 21:54

There was one at my school. I've always liked the name - it's classy.

Heruka · 25/08/2021 22:00

Love it.

NigellaSeed · 25/08/2021 22:07

Sorry, hate it, 50 year olds name. Maybe will sound good on a kid in 20 years

OnlyFlans · 25/08/2021 22:13

Love it - very cool and quite unusual.

Papergirl1968 · 25/08/2021 22:58

I forgot about Lowri Turner, Tulips.
I just realised the Lowri I know actually spells it Lowrie. She’s Welsh.
Thinking about it, I do prefer Lowrie to Lois.

takeasadsongandmakeitbetter · 25/08/2021 22:59

My favourite girls name! Definite yes for me!

FortunesFavour · 25/08/2021 23:02

Lovely name, but I’m another who can’t help but think of Family Guy

CaffiSaliMali · 26/08/2021 09:33

Lowri is definitely pronounced Low-ree (low to rhyme with snow, just like the English word low). I've never met a Welsh speaker from either the North or the South who pronounces Lowri as Lowry.

I used to work with a Lowri (in England) who very clearly pronounced it correctly but pretty much everyone else pronounced it as Lowry, didn't matter how often she corrected them. I read somewhere that Lowri Turner is a Lowri but gave up correcting the Lowry mispronunciation after a while.

I think Lois is nice but it does remind me of Family Guy and Malcolm in the Middle. I think the low-iss pronunciation is slightly nicer than the Welsh Loyce pronunciation.

TallulahBetty · 26/08/2021 09:38

Loyce is NOT a correct pronunciation - it is Greek, and only ever Low-iss.

It's Greek.
daisypond · 26/08/2021 11:42

It is biblical - New Testament - but of Greek origin. I’m not so keen on it. It just has a very dowdy image about it, which puts me off. I don’t know any, though, apart from the TV ones

randomusernameagain · 26/08/2021 11:43

Love it! I would pronounce it Low-is if I was reading it :)

StevieNix · 26/08/2021 11:46

Yeah I just hear it said in the Family guy voice which puts me off massively but objectively without that association it’s not a bad name. Purely for the family guy connotation I couldn’t use it

Florencenotflo · 26/08/2021 11:49

My 2 year old is Lois. Middle name is Ava. We had it on our list of names for a while, it wasn't my favourite but when she was born it really suited her.

The other names we liked were Lilly, Harriet, Sophia, Faye and Lottie.

LouLucky · 26/08/2021 15:51

I think quite a few people in Wales may disagree with you 😊 It's possible for the same name to have different origins and even different, perfectly correct pronunciations.
