Hoping for some inspiration for slightly more unusual girl names. DD2 due in autumn, currently living in Norway (DH is norwegian) but family in UK, so names need to kind of work in both norwegian and english.

I love longer more feminine sounding names, DD1 is Pernille (pronounced 'per-nil-leh').

Currently toying with:
Frida
Dahlia
Arianna
Linnea

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Love Maren, but Snøfrid looks gorgeous. How is Linnea pronounced?

Absolutely love Frida. I did like Astrid, but that is very popular around our way now.

MadeinBelfast · 24/08/2021 21:47

I know an amazing Ylva so that makes me like the name!

Crockof · 24/08/2021 21:49

I don't think that works as well in English, vulva is how I read it.

@MissMarpleTheMurderer it is pronounced 'lin-nay-ah'

@irresistibleoverwhelm thanks, Linnea was our only agreed on name for a while, unfortunately we can't use Astrid as we have a few in both the immediate and distant family. (Also in Norwegian you don't say the 'd' on the end.

@Vallmo47 yes... Sigh, we already wrestled through the whole 'Per-neil' and 'Per-nilly' wild card pronunciations of Pernille, so I actually had the same fears as you with the 'linear' danger.. 😂

@Crockof yeah it is a tricky one, we have an Ylva in the family, it is pronounced more like 'ull-vah' we don't really have that sound in English...

How do you say Linnea?

I'd have said linear but your post implies not like that Blush.

Hercisback · 24/08/2021 22:04

Sorry cross posts OP. That makes sense for Linnea.

Heckythump1 · 24/08/2021 22:05

Inneke.... pronounced Inica

LittleMyTopKnot · 24/08/2021 22:07

Linnea is pronounced

Lin-NEY-uh (according to phonetics). Three distinct sounds, emphasis on the middle

LittleMyTopKnot · 24/08/2021 22:08

Sorry, cross post Blush

Ooh, this is right up my street being Swedish. If you like Pernille but is worried about the e at the end, you could go for the Swedish version which is Pernilla (often shortened Nilla).

I also love Tilda, Ida, Liv, Sanna, Lina, Li, Nova and Tora.

Snoken · 24/08/2021 22:29

Oh, just seen Signe suggested. I do like that name, but in English it would be pronounced with a hard g, which doesn't sound as nice. It should be pronounced sing-ne. Same as Magnus is Mang-nus but all English speaking people say Mag-nus.

grandmashotdoodlebugs · 24/08/2021 22:29

Frida

altiara · 24/08/2021 23:47

Never heard Tora before, love this too!

squooshe · 25/08/2021 00:10

Thora?

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 25/08/2021 00:12

I've always loved the sound of Linnea - wish I had Scandi heritage! But Dahlia and Frida are pretty too (bear in mind Dahlia is usually "Day -lia" in the UK, not sure about in Norway?) . Elin or Kristen maybe?

Givemethatknife · 25/08/2021 00:49
