Is this name too popular? I do not know one. Husband loves it

I know two

FuckingFlumps · 24/08/2021 19:56

Honestly yes, Archie is one of the most popular names out there right now.

It sometimes feels like names like Archie, Albie, Arlo and Alfie are what approximately 90% of boys under 5 are called around where I live.

Soozikinzi · 24/08/2021 20:39

I know a couple but I do like it . I like Albie in particular of that type of name as well .

toastofthetown · 24/08/2021 20:40

Too popular is entirely subjective. There are enough parents who choose top ten names to keep them popular. Some parents will only look at names outside of the top 50, others the top 500.

It’s worth noting with name popularity that the most popular names are used less often than the most popular names used to be used. The names that were popular when you were at school will have been given to a higher percentage of babies again. So the five Sarahs in a class effect should be less of a concern these days, as parents are picking from an increasingly wide pool of names.

Name trends are also highly localised. You can look up name data per region, I don’t think that’s super helpful as pockets of popularity are often more local than that. Not sure if you have any friends with babies in your area, but might be worth asking how many Archies they know. And also how many similar names like Alfie, Freddie, Albie, Arthur because even if he's the only Archie, he might fall into a sea of children with very similar names and it might all feel quite samey anyway.

ItsAChallengingWank · 24/08/2021 20:44

If you like it, go for it. I regret not calling my eldest the name I wanted because of what people thought

I know of 2 Archie's and I've 3 dc if that makes a difference

Agree with this. At a toddler group recently every single little boy (maybe 7 or 8 in total), including my DS had a short name beginning with A, of which nearly all were one of these. Archie is a lovely name, so if you like it you should go for it, but it is common, at least where I live!
PearlyBird · 24/08/2021 20:50

I prefer Richie and wanted to call my son Richie.

Archie's ok though.

freelions · 24/08/2021 20:56

Personally I would avoid it purely because of the popularity

As others have mentioned there are a huge number of Archies, Alfies, Albies, Arthurs & Arlos born in the past few years

MrsGilly1 · 28/08/2021 08:17

I keep hearing its common but none in my child's class.
Alfie is more popular here than Archie xx

If you like it then use it as it a lovely name x

WiggIyWoo · 28/08/2021 08:22

I've taught many, many Archies and Alfies but don't actually know any friends' babies called either. I wonder if it was more popular a few years ago. I live in a more middle class area to where I work and that also might make a difference (I'm trying to not be offensive there, but names are different depending on where you live!).

LiveSimply · 28/08/2021 08:24

What a lovely name!
I’d go for it, 100%! I’ve only known one Archie in the schools I’ve worked in & he must be 20 now!!!!

Balonzette · 28/08/2021 08:43

I think it's too popular and has become very boring because of it.

peaceinourtime · 31/08/2021 08:25

I like Archie, my bird was called Archie(Arch).

Babydust13 · 31/08/2021 09:36

I don't know any but I prefer Archer. I don't think it matters about popularity though if you can find a name you love

tickledtiger · 31/08/2021 11:41

I think it is pretty popular, that’s not necessarily a bad thing though. It wouldn’t stop me using it if I liked it.

bloominglovelyorange · 31/08/2021 13:23

It's been falling in popularity in recent years. I think it's lovely. About to leave the top 20 names will probably be outside top 40 in next couple of years or so

Is this name too popular
since you ask, yes.

So many A*ie names out there.

At least give them a full proper name, which for Archie would be something like Archibald.

Sorry for being a grumpbag though.
