Cecilia, Claudia or...?

DD2 due imminently. We have a short surname. DD1 has a rare-ish, classic name outside top 100, looking for something similar for her sister. We really like Cecilia, but not so keen on the meaning ('blind'). Would she get called See-see, or would it sound like Sissy Confused? Also like Claudia but meaning also throws me off a little. Any other ideas?

Cecilia is nice although I prefer Cicely. I think CeCe is quite likely although not inevitable. As nicknames go though, I think it’s a nice one.

ItsReallyOnlyMe · 19/08/2021 19:17

Cordelia is similar to your other choices.

Bodgers · 19/08/2021 19:18

I adore both of those names, don't think you can go wrong with either. Similar ones we are considering (some may be marmite! But all traditional names...)

Margaret
Constance
Brigid
Rosanna
Zita
Cosima

Celia is nicer than Cecelia imo, Cecelia is a bit unnecessarily flouncy. I also like Celine, Celeste and Cerys which are similar.

Unfortunately I think CeCe is a possibility with any of the above or the ones you've listed.

I know a Ceci - it's always pronounced See-see. It's lovely.

HelenaJustina · 19/08/2021 19:22

I have a Cecilia, she goes by Cecy (pronounced see-see) by choice. I love her name!
We also considered Claudia, Francesca (this would have worked for her, I think she would suit both this and Frankie as a nn), Verity, Adelaide, Constance, Bridget among others!

Lemonsyellow · 19/08/2021 19:26

They are both great names.

When I saw the thread title I immediately thought of the meanings. Such a shame as they are beautiful names.

If it was one of the two I'd go for Cecilia as she is the patron saint of music, which is lovely.

DarkDarkNight · 19/08/2021 20:40

I like Claudia out of the two. I’m not keen on Cecelia at all and prefer Cecily.

Cindie943811A · 19/08/2021 20:45

I like Cecelia because of the musical association.
You could shorten it to Celia instead of Cece.
Celeste is lovely
So is Claudette and Claudia and Colette

OrangeAndYellowAndBlue · 19/08/2021 21:03

Celia is nice and has a nicer meaning if that bothers you - it means heavenly.

I love Claudia though.

RobinPenguins · 19/08/2021 21:05

I’m not sure how much people are aware of the meanings of names tbh - I don’t know either of those. Both are lovely. I know a Cece (short for something else) and it’s always pronounced seesee, never like sissy.

Celestine

(I like Celeste written down but spoken, it can be surprisingly abrupt). Celestine sounds better.

catsjammies · 19/08/2021 21:21

I really liked Cecelia but like you didn't like the meaning so we went with Cordelia instead.

PrincessesRUs · 19/08/2021 21:25

I have a Claudia so obviously loved that!

Smurftastic · 19/08/2021 22:22

I quite like Celeste/Celestine, but what would she end up being called? Wouldn't she end up as Lestie? Celie? I can't imagine that.

I'd probably be less bothered about the meaning of Cecilia if not the fact my poor daughter is highly likely to inherit bad eyesight as it runs in both mine and my husband's family!
I can just imagine her finding the meaning of her name at the age of 12 and telling us how we ruined her life Wink.

Celie, CeCe, Est, Estie, even Tina. Celly pr. Selly, or even Callie.

I think I'd use Celie. Which is a lot like Celia, without being Celia.

lottiegarbanzo · 19/08/2021 22:33

Hang on, I meant I'd use Celly. But anyway, options!

siramram · 19/08/2021 22:41

I have an Allegra

She was Claudia right up until she was actually born

I love Claudia

Earlybird00 · 19/08/2021 22:44

We opted for Cicily after considering Cecily. I love it and I occasionally call her Cissy but everyone else uses her full name

AllAroundTheWorldYeah · 19/08/2021 22:56

Cecilia is much nicer than Claudia. I find Claudia quite masculine.

AllAroundTheWorldYeah · 19/08/2021 22:58

Also no one knows or cares about the "meaning" of names. Cultural references are much more important.
