Boys name- Luca?

Hi all,

Am 33 weeks pregnant with our first child and know we are having a boy.

To give some context to this- I'm half Italian (with some Irish thrown in!), and my partner is Bahraini (but with Persian ancestry). We live in England.

We have decided on middle and last names which cover my partners heritage but still struggling a bit with first names.

We were both set on Leo partly as we loved the name but also has it nodded to my Italian side. Unfortunately one of our best friends has just named her son Leo (she didn't know it was our front runner) so it is just no longer an option for us.

I came across the name Luca yesterday which we both really like although I'm worried it will get shortened to Luke which I do not like at all (no offence to anyone)

Does anyone know or have a son called Luca in the UK and if so what is their experience of that name?

We were going to have it as Lucca then realised it might be feminine in Italian? So went with the more traditional Luca and no one has ever misinterpreted it so far. Smile

Lucca is the name of a town in Tuscany, it's not used as a first name in Italian.

I like it
It does make me sing my name is Luka, I live on the second floor though!

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 15/08/2021 11:09

I love Luca.
I only know 2: one is DS2's best mate, the other is a friend's kid.

there's also a Luca on the tv series SWAT - I kind of love him🤣

Theworldisquiethere · 15/08/2021 11:28

It’s quite a popular name where I live, I’ve met a few children called Luca over the past few years. Lovely name!

Curlymam88 · 15/08/2021 11:40

Luca is very popular. I know a few young kids called it in Wales.

Ellmau · 15/08/2021 12:30

Luca is great with your Italian heritage.

I don't see how it could possibly be mispronounced.

30degreesandmeltinghere · 15/08/2021 12:44

Do you live on the second floor op?

LunaDreams · 15/08/2021 16:57

@Zigzag77 @Ellmau I'm likely over-thinking the pronunciation thing but having had my very straightforward name mis pronounced my entire life I've learnt to never underestimate the daftness of the general public!

It's a gorgeous name. My cousins little boy is a Luca, half Italian, it suits him.

dressupinyou · 15/08/2021 19:26

I love it. And I knew a teen called Luca who was a lovely kind boy so it has really warm associations for me.

MiloAndEddie · 15/08/2021 21:22

The Luca I know is actually Gianluca on his birth certificate but has only ever been called Luca. Italian parents living in the UK. Never been called Luke as far as I know

Runrigdan · 15/08/2021 21:26

Luca is a lovely name!

iklboo · 15/08/2021 21:29

DS's best friend's name. He's nearly 16. Lovely lad.

CustardyCreams · 17/08/2021 20:27

So popular where I live. DD had 1 Luka, a Lucas, and a Luca in her class last year, and there are two more called Luca in her year.

Lalliella · 17/08/2021 23:17

Gorgeous name OP. My friend’s son is called Luca (she’s Italian) I haven’t heard of it being shortened at all.

Ooh Gianluca is really nice! I love Italian names.
FeloniusGru · 18/08/2021 15:34

Love it. Lucas was our second choice for a boy after Leo but Luca is just as lovely. Finn was also on the list, sounds like we have similar tastes!

HPLikecraft · 18/08/2021 20:20

Luca is a beautiful name.
I doubt it'd be shortened to Luke, because it's softer name and somehow easier to say; Luke is quite abrupt.
