What do you think of the below? I don't think any work. I don't want anything too frilly and I much prefer long names which can be shortened. I also have a thing for English/British names where possible although I know some of the below don't fit. Any other names I might not have thought of would be great!

Mabel
Meredith (Merry)
Aphra (Fifi)
Ada
Edith (Edie)
Penelope (Penny)
Luna
Etta
Freya
Erin

Iris?
Maeve?

IDontLikeMondays88 · 12/08/2021 14:28

I like Ada

Gwen and Ada - sounds good

I think Luna, Etta and Freya are too common and don’t go with Gwen

Modestandatinybitsexy · 12/08/2021 14:40

Ohh @Lcachu I love Maeve, adding that to the list!

From your list I like Penelope and Meredith.

What about:
Joanna
Miriam
Imogen

emmathedilemma · 12/08/2021 14:59

I was going to say Meredith and it's already on your list!! The only Gwendoline I know has a sister called Isabelle.

I love Meredith with Gwendolen. Perfect.

BlueChampagne · 12/08/2021 16:38

Rowena

I like Gwendolen it's very Edwardian. I would put it with Imogen, Beatrice, Phoebe or Violet.

Of your list Meredith goes best, but I really dislike it - very dowdy unless you're actually Welsh. Prefer Meriel.

Ljslibby · 12/08/2021 19:32

I can’t think of anything that hasn’t already been mentioned but I must agree I adore the name Meredith with Gwendolen it’s very pretty!

CaffiSaliMali · 12/08/2021 20:02

Gwendolen is a fabulous name!

Meredith is nice but if you're in Wales it's an anglicised version of a Welsh boy's name, used for girls.

With Gwendolen I would go for another long name, especially one with a short nickname option like Gwen:
Josephine
Alexandra/ia/drina
Evangeline
Elizabeth
Katharine
Emmeline
Valentina

Some shorter options which go with Gwen:
Tess
Erin
Beth (or Bethan)
Meg (or Megan)
Ruth
Kate
Emma

Ah interesting - what’s the original name.

TatianaBis · 12/08/2021 20:17

Josephine goes well and is nicely Edwardian.

CaffiSaliMali · 12/08/2021 20:22

Ah interesting - what’s the original name.

It's Maredudd. Pronounced differently to Meredith, with the emphasis on the second syllable - ma-RED-ith.
TatianaBis · 12/08/2021 22:00

Ma red ith I like.

Modestandatinybitsexy · 13/08/2021 00:08

Thanks everyone for some great suggestions, Meredith was my favourite but I didn't think it went that well with Gwen so it's nice to hear it does.

@CaffiSaliMali I'm a bit worried about the Welsh connection, we're not in Wales and it's actually the only British country the dc wouldn't have a connection to!

For someone who much prefers long names that can be shortened, that’s a pretty odd list of names that are mostly short! I mean, I love Etta and Freya and Erin and a lot of that list but they’re the opposite of what you say you like.

I love Gwen/Gwendolyn. I also love

Josephine (Jo/Josie)
Beatrix/Beatrice (Bea)
Clementine/Clemency (Clemmie - Clem too close to Gwen?)
Constance (Connie)
Felicity (Fifi, if you like that shortening)
Rosalind (Rosa/Rosie)
Miriam (Mimi)
Evelyn (Eve/Evie)
Elowen/Eleanor (Elle/Ellie)

lemoncrisp · 13/08/2021 00:51

Meredith and Gwendolin sound great together. Also like Josephine as suggested above.

CaffiSaliMali · 13/08/2021 07:46

If you're not in Wales I think Meredith is fine OP. I couldn't use it as my family are Welsh speakers and I'd never hear the end of it.

Everywhere else people will just think 'Welsh girl's name'.

Have a look at Cornish names too - Lowenna, Elowen, Morwenna (which is also Welsh) etc. are all lovely.

I see someone has suggested Rosalind, which is lovely. See also Rosamund and Rosanna.

Florence is nice too and has a Victorian feel, which the anglicised Gwendoline also has but it goes well with the Gwendolen spelling and pronunciation too. Beatrice would work too, and Imogen.
