Agree that Winthrop is awful. Beatrice the poshest.

ClaudiaWankleman · 11/08/2021 12:42

I think Beatrice sounds poshest.

If she's quite Sloane Square-y, she'd also need an awful nickname like 'Tiggy', 'Bump' or 'Binky' though. Those kind of nicknames really mark someone out as posh for me.

Barwell76 · 11/08/2021 12:46

When is it set? Some names were posh in the past but aren't as posh nowadays.

JustMeAndWheatley · 11/08/2021 13:38

Not Clara - maid’s name

borntobequiet · 11/08/2021 14:25

Clarissa is posher than Clara. But what variety of posh do you want? Intellectual posh? Related to Royalty posh? Old money landed gentry posh? Fallen on hard times (often arty or barmy) posh? All will go for different posho names.

BrownEyedSquirrel · 11/08/2021 14:42

Clara. For some reason it also seems the most believable to me.

Are you serious Confused

Only in the UK could names be so categorised!?

Dramagirl22 · 11/08/2021 15:12

It’s set in London in the early 2000’s! I’m looking for old-money style posh. Arabella, Araminta, Ophelia type stuff.

HappyTimeTunnelDinosaur · 11/08/2021 15:16

Of those I'd say Beatrice, but Fenella, Cressida, Felicity, Ariadne, Penelope etc are possibly more so to me.

Notthisnotthat · 11/08/2021 15:21

You could watch the early seasons of Made in Chelsea, lots of posh folk.

Binky is Alexandra
amber
Catherine is Cathy
Francesca
funda
Gabriella
Louise
Millie
Rosie

borntobequiet · 11/08/2021 16:43

Are you serious

Yes

Hesma · 11/08/2021 18:31

Clara or better still, Clarissa

2reefsin30knots · 11/08/2021 18:38

Cordelia Winthrop Scott

Name of one of the Flyte children in Brideshead, must be posh Grin

Fauvist · 11/08/2021 19:03

How old is this character?

Dramagirl22 · 11/08/2021 19:12

Mid 20s, youngest of 3 with an older sister and older brother, Arabella and Hugo.

Rather than Sophie, Sophia: pronounced so-fye-a.

I was at university with some very posh twenty-somethings in the early 2000s. Some of the poshest were named:

Cici (see-see)
Molly
India
Imogen
Pia
Anastasia

Brideshead is Catholic posh, deep waters. (St Cordelia was a companion of St Ursula, martyred at the hands of the Huns.)

In that case, none of your suggestions are quite posh enough. Beatrice almost gets there.

How about Cordelia, Henrietta, Cecily, Fenella, Fabia, Leonie etc.

soupforbrains · 11/08/2021 23:28

Also pro tip for the very posh. Throw in a very unusual middle name. It’s not uncommon for mother’s maiden names to be given as a middle name to ‘keep up the name’ if no sons and an already double barrelled name.

lljkk · 11/08/2021 23:30

How old is this character supposed to be in ~2003, OP?
What was a posh baby name at time of their putative birth?

DontDoThatGeorge · 11/08/2021 23:34

Francesca, nn Frankie.

I know these people 😂

Kanaloa · 11/08/2021 23:38

Sophie definitely, although I actually think the other names are probably ‘posher’ Sophie Winthrop Scott just has a telegraph baby announcement ring. Especially if her nickname is something like Topsy or Biffle.

whattodo2019 · 12/08/2021 00:15

Sophie ...

mathanxiety · 12/08/2021 00:50

Winthrop is more of an American Pilgrim name. I wouldn't consider it aristocratic.

Aristocratic surnames tend to have Norman/French origins.

Meh2020 · 12/08/2021 01:00

Candida - I knew a super posh one in the mid 2000s :)
