Tabitha and Magdalena

Do they work as sibling names? I know names don't need to go perfectly together but I just want to make sure there's nothing I'm not thinking of/they don't sound ridiculous together.

Thank you!

Tabitha and Matilda would be better

Violetlavenders · 10/08/2021 08:44

Why wouldn't they 'work' together?

Both are beautiful classic names.

Balonzette · 10/08/2021 09:30

Just want to make sure there's nothing I'm not thinking about. Like for example, for boys I loved the names Reuben and Seth together, but I read online that they are characters in a book/TV show which apparently makes them indivudially fine, but as a pair unusable for some posters.

Or I just wanted to make sure the names didn't give off a very different vibe. A previous baby names thread asked about Maud as a sister for Tabitha, and a lot of posters said the two names had too different a vibe and would seem odd together. So just wanted to make sure the two names work and there's nothing strange about the pairing.

But very happy to see them both described as beautiful and classic, thank you Smile

I agree.

I think they are fine together. For most of their lives they won't be introduced alongside each other. Siblings names only really matter if there's a massive cultural association with the two names together (such as Harry and Ron), if they sound way too similar (Anne and Dan) or if one sibling sticks out like a sore thumb, and that's usually where there are more siblings as a reference point. Something like Persephone, Apollo, Antigone and Hendrix; or James, Anne, Charles and Bathsheba. But that's all very subjective anyway, and what works for you might not for someone else.

Violetlavenders · 10/08/2021 15:10

I find Tabitha and Mathilda way too rhymey as both have the same vowels and length

TheVanguardSix · 10/08/2021 15:21

No.
I love Tabitha.
Magdalena is a very Catholic name, to me. It's too heavy. I do love it but not enough to name a child it. I would be thinking Elizabeth and Magdalena. Ophelia and Magdalena. Theresa and Magdalena.

With Tabitha, I think Phoebe works really well.
Or Tabitha and Marion (like SJP's kids)
Tabitha and Eleanor
Tabitha and Florence
Tabitha and Samantha
Tabitha and Beatrix/Beatrice

MsJuniper · 10/08/2021 15:36

They may end up as Tabby and Maggie, if that bothers you.

RuthW · 10/08/2021 17:46

Both lovely

DaisyWaldron · 10/08/2021 17:50

I think they are fine together, although neither are good if you don't like shortening as I don't know a single person with either of names who goes by their full first name.

SummaLuvin · 10/08/2021 19:01

If I was Tabitha I would 100% feel like I had drawn the short straw, Magdalena is such a beautiful name! But I don't think they sound bad together, and as far as I know, there isn't a strange connection between the names in pop culture.

Kanaloa · 10/08/2021 19:04

I think they’re both lovely names. Quite witchy if you know what I mean but in a nice way!

I can’t think of any bad associations but then I also don’t know how Rueben & Seth are linked and think they sound like fab names for brothers.

Kanaloa · 10/08/2021 19:04

Reuben, sorry.

Ivegotanewfridge · 10/08/2021 19:04

Magdalena is a truly beautiful name

Balonzette · 11/08/2021 15:40

Thank you everyone! I'm almost glad to see you say you'd think Tabitha got the short straw, @SummaLuvin , as I was actually worried people might think Magdalena did... As much as I love Magdalena, Tabitha seems much more popular on here, whereas I never see Magdalena suggested. So it's actually really reassuring to see some balance Grin

Love Magdalena, prefer Talitha to Tabitha as it flows better.

Buttercup54321 · 12/08/2021 00:17

Hmmm. Tabs and Mags.

I definitely agree

Interestingly ive never met, or heard of a British Magdalena. I have met many.thry have all bar one been from poland (the other from Brazil). Everyone calls themself Magda without fail. I wonder if it might be assumed your Magdelena might be called Magda before meeting her, or kust always shortened, and also carry the assumption she had english as a second language (im assuming its not) -as ive met nine Magdas alleho had varying degrees of english, none great". I only say this as it might make a difference in her future when applying for jobs where prejudices do exist subconsciously over names. I have always looked ahead at names which
Would be "innocent" whether my children might want to be designers, scientists, high court judges or any profession where a name could stick out in the wrong way- ii think if you can find names without too much bias or identity attached in general it makes for a stronger identity for your child (and better chance of passing uni and work applications and interviews etc).
Ultimayely it doesnt mayter what i think orhow o chose names.nor who I've met in time. You need a name you love and fits into your family group both in sound but also in the vibe/style ofthe name.

TatianaBis · 12/08/2021 07:39

Interestingly ive never met, or heard of a British Magdalena.

One of my sisters has Magdalena as middle name. Her bf is called Magdalen. Both British.

MrMeSeeks · 12/08/2021 07:43

Think the opposite, Tabitha is much better.
I agree with a previous poster tabitha and matilda is so much nicer.

OrangeAndYellowAndBlue · 12/08/2021 08:32

I love Magdalena (also Madeleine), and it goes fine with Tabitha.

CamdenLurker · 12/08/2021 08:40

I work with quite a few Magdalena's, every one of them goes by Magda and they are all Polish. I don't think it's a particularly pretty name, it's quite harsh to me. Much prefer Marta.

Also agree Tabitha and Matilda sounds nicer.

Balonzette · 12/08/2021 11:14

Thanks for the suggestions re: Matilda but I don't really like Matilda as a name in it's own right, although it does sound cute with Tabitha! I used to love Matilda, but it has been very overdone in my area to the point of overtaking even the Lilys/Evies etc and it's spoiled the name for me. Also, I like biblical names and Matilda doesn't have that advantage for me Smile
