Dotty or Dottie?

I'm naming her Dorothy because I like the shortened version, but how would you spell it? My mum says I can't spell it Dotty but I can't see what the problem is?

I would spell it Dottie. Dotty means a bit eccentric.

CloseYourEyesAndSee · 08/08/2021 09:14

Dotty means barmy.

cobblers123 · 08/08/2021 09:18

A relative who is 90 is Dorothy but mainly known as Dolly.

One of my neighbours had a bassett hound called Dottie.

Synchrony · 08/08/2021 09:25

I don't see any problem with Dotty. I mean, it sounds the same as Dottie so to me if you are going to make barmy connotations they both do that. I prefer Dotty.

Quercus3 · 08/08/2021 09:38

I think Dotty is fine

Hardploc · 08/08/2021 09:49

Dorothy is gorgeous. I think Dotty and Dottie are both fine

RuthW · 08/08/2021 13:15

I prefer Dottie but Dotty is fine.
Dorothy is a lovely name.

lilmishap · 08/08/2021 13:19

I have a new niece called Dottie but not as an abbreviation.
I was a bit "Oh really" at first but I love it now.

Classica · 08/08/2021 15:28

Dottie

DramaAlpaca · 08/08/2021 15:31

Whichever you prefer. I'd probably go for Dottie, in the same way as Hattie for Harriet.

I really like Dolly as a diminutive of Dorothy.

MrsGilly1 · 09/08/2021 06:56

I think Dottie x

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 09/08/2021 07:28

I love Dorothy. I would spell the diminutive ‘Dottie’. ‘Dotty’ is an adjective meaning ‘covered in dots’ or ‘mad’.

Laureatus · 09/08/2021 08:24

My big sister is a Dorothy. We called her Dotty with a y but since very early she has absolutely preferred Dot. She's an artist and poet now and uses either Dot or Dorothy in full.

CaptainMyCaptain · 09/08/2021 08:33

It's like Maggy/Maggie or Katy/Katie. Whatever you choose some people will spell it the wrong way for the rest of the child's life. I know.

bubblebath62636 · 09/08/2021 08:36

Dorothy is my DD's middle name, we nickname her Dottie, I don't think it matters how it's spelt.

waterlego · 09/08/2021 10:08

Exactly this. I don’t think it matters. I love the name and the nickname 💚

Violetlavenders · 09/08/2021 10:28

Dotty and Dottie are pronounced the same!

Dotty is fine. It's just a nickname anyway.

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 09/08/2021 11:35

Dotty and Dottie are pronounced the same!

So are Bear and Bare but there's a reason why only one of those spellings is used for an affectionate nickname.

Pinkstegosaurus · 10/08/2021 20:36

Dottie is very sweet. Can Dodie also be used as a nn for Dorothy?

Violetlavenders · 10/08/2021 22:15

Yes, as can Dory.

Buttercup54321 · 12/08/2021 00:21

Dolly.

PoppyDotx · 12/08/2021 00:22

My pug is called Dottie, I think it's cute.

LtDansleg · 12/08/2021 00:24

I think the spelling makes a difference. I know Dottie is a girls name either way, but I see names ending in y as masculine, and feminine ending in ie.

CakesOfVersailles · 12/08/2021 00:30

I would automatically spell it Dottie but you can use Dotty if you like, although that would make me think of then adjective. I really like Dorothy.

BTW even if you choose a spelling other people may spell it differently. I had that with my own name, even my mother and father spelled my nickname differently! Think like Liz/Lizzie/Lizzy/Lizy/Lizie (but it made a bit more sense with my nickname).

LiveSimply · 11/09/2021 18:27

Dottie :) what a lovely name!
