Myself and my husband have cut down a long list of boys names that we like, but still not 100% sure. They're a mix of Irish/Scottish
What do you think;

-Ewan
-Caolann (pronounced kay-linn)

  • Cillian
  • Connell
  • Oisin

Please be honest if you don't like the name

Thank you

My favourite is Ewan, followed by Oisin then Connell.

Not too keen on the other two.

MrsGilly1 · 07/08/2021 08:41

Ewan followed by Oisin. Not keen on the others x

DotDotDotDotDot · 07/08/2021 09:07

I really like Oisìn and Cillian and from your list. I’m not sure the Caolann spelling looks right, perhaps an Irish speaker will confirm. Ewan is nice, I also like Eoin and Evan if you want any suggestions. Good luck.

NotMeekNotObedient · 07/08/2021 09:17

I like Ewan & Connell best

Lockdownbear · 07/08/2021 09:22

Ewan and Connell are both lovely.

Caolann and Cillian both look like miss spelt girls names, Caroline and Gillian, people will miss read them. He'll spend his life correcting people.

Oisin, is OK but I'm not that keen on it.

Pigeonorcoot · 07/08/2021 09:24

I like Ewan (prefer Euan spelling personally)

Tulips15 · 07/08/2021 09:27

Caolann and Oisin, you/Ds will always have to pronounce and spell .
Ewan is the only one I would choose

WhoppingBigBackside · 07/08/2021 09:33

Not keen on Caolann and Cillian.

I'd pick Ewan

MummytoGeorgie · 07/08/2021 09:37

@coffeewithmilk I'm sorry but I don't like any of them..

Ewan reminds me of Ewan the sheep

Caolann - I have a named that does not sound the same as how it's spelt and all my life I've had to explain to every person what it should be I always get called the wrong thing and wished I had been called something else.

Cillian - as in kill - Ian ? Awful

Connell reminds me of the estate agents

Oisin is like poison

Think you need some new names

No offence intended just being honest x

coffeewithmilk · 07/08/2021 09:42

Thank you everyone for your opinions.
I'm Irish, so wanted something with a bit of Irish to it, but now I think the names like caolann etc will cause hassle for the rest of his life having to correct people on spelling etc.

Thanks all for your honesty! All comments taken on board!

All the names are fine, @coffeewithmilk. Pick the one you like best.

LizzieAnt · 07/08/2021 13:36

Hi OP,
I've never seen Caolann spelt with two n's like that, only as Caolán (or Caolan if you leave out the fada). This name is pronounced differently depending on where in Ireland you live.
I like Oisín, prefer it with the fada, I know it might be awkward in the UK.
Cillian is nice.
I prefer Conall (Cun-al) to the anglicised Connell, but don't know if I'd use it outside Ireland.
Not a huge fan of Ewan.

There are other Irish names that may be simpler to use in the UK if that's what you'd prefer -
Oscar, Finn, Aidan, Conor, Seán, Ronán/Ronan maybe?

LivingLaVidaBabyShower · 07/08/2021 13:49

Cillian and oisin are both really nice.

I work in an international central london office and am confident 90%+ of my coworkers could spell and pronounce these both no problem.

DinosaurDiana · 07/08/2021 13:51

Caolann looks like Carol Ann to me. I’d assume it’s female.
I like Ewan spell Euan or Owain.

Yellowmoons · 07/08/2021 16:34
  • Ewan - like it
-Caolann (pronounced kay-linn) - not keen, sounds quite feminine to me
  • Cillian - like it
  • Connell - nope
  • Oisin - nope

I really like Finn / Finley, though it's very popular. Also love Fraser. How about Aidan?

storkstalk · 07/08/2021 16:35

Cillian and Connell are my favourite

Cookiebox · 07/08/2021 18:25

Osian is the best by a mile

DramaAlpaca · 07/08/2021 18:34

My God, some people are so bloody ignorant about Irish names Angry

@coffeewithmilk all your names are great, I like all of them. However, this thread shows very clearly what you'll be up against in the UK if you choose an Irish name.

Rehgarding your pronunciation of Caolann, to me it should be KEE-lun, not KAY-linn.

Also, Oisín needs the fada to get the ush-EEN pronunciation. He'll get OH-sheen in the UK though, which would annoy me.

I much prefer Conal to Connell, it's the usual spelling of the first name.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 07/08/2021 20:20

Oisin is nice and Connell/Conal is okay. I'm not keen on sound of the others, sorry.

motherofoisin · 07/08/2021 20:44

I have an Oisín, living in Northern Ireland and so far I've had no issues, i gave him an easy/well known middle name so if he really hates Oisín when he's older he can use his middle name instead.

Also someone told me that every Oisín they know uses the nickname Ozzy Confused not entirely sure how I feel about ozzy but something to consider

sarah13xx · 08/08/2021 05:22

Love Ewan and Connell. We live in scotland and sometimes Connell sounds like the slang way of saying candle so that put me off it for our little one 🙈 I loved it from normal people though! Ewan was in my shortlist

TatianaBis · 08/08/2021 19:29

Oisin is one of my favourite names.
Ciliian - is the new Liam
Connell - like

Dislike Ewan as very 80s. I like the Welsh version Ioan though.

TatianaBis · 08/08/2021 19:31

He'll get OH-sheen in the UK though, which would annoy me.

In the U.K. he will get O as in clock - shun.

EmbarrassingMama · 09/08/2021 11:05

Why is Cillian so popular? Am I the only person who thinks the sound 'KILL' in a name isn't particularly nice?

DacwMamYnDwad · 09/08/2021 12:04

@TatianaBis, Ioan isn't the welsh version of Ewan, but Iwan might be.
