Struggling with names

Hello everyone… I am a bit fed up of thinking about names for our baby boy… It used to be fun but now feels like a burden and I am tired of thinking about this… I am 31 weeks pregnant. We already have a girl called Emily. We love her name and we wanted something nice, simple and short for our baby boy as well. However we cannot agree on a name. We live in the UK but we are a Portuguese speaking family. I think that just makes things harder as we don’t want a name that our parents can’t pronounce like Andrew or Henry. We have come up with a name but I am not sure about this as it is unusual, long and the pronunciation changes a lot in English and Portuguese - ESTEVAN. My daughter loves the name because it starts with an E (it was not on purpose). Everyone in our family keeps asking what his name will be and we don’t know what to say anymore. My question is should we just name him Estevan and hope I will love the name one day or should we try to find another name that we both love? (Which feels impossible right now).
How would you pronounce Estevan?
My favourite names are Caleb, Jacob, Logan and Alex but my husband is not a fan. He likes Oliver, Kevin and Henrique (Portuguese version of Henry). Heeelpp!!!

I like it and would say EST-eh-van. (both Es having the same sound)

Synchrony · 05/08/2021 17:32

I love Estevan! I'd pronounce it like the previous poster. I've also loved "Esteban" since I heard it as a child in The Mysterious Cities of Gold. Personally I like it more than your other suggestions.

If it's pronounced differently in Portuguese it wouldn't be difficult for people to get used to that though.

ZsaZsa1 · 05/08/2021 17:41

I think Estevan works fine in the UK. How about Evan or Leon?

Noshowwithoutpunch · 05/08/2021 17:43

I like it.
Es tev ann is how I'd say it.

Lotsachocolateplease · 05/08/2021 17:46

Emily and Oliver work really well together.
Smile
I think that’s my favourite from your list

LittlefairyMum · 05/08/2021 17:47

Oliver Smile

Elouera · 05/08/2021 17:58

I would pronounce it like Emilio Estevan- EST-eh-van.

I like all your other names, but Caleb and Jacob always sounds religious to me, and Kevin would be an absolute NO. Oliver is also SO popular in the UK. I like Logan or Henrique, as a bit different.

WhoppingBigBackside · 05/08/2021 18:42

The actor, son of Martin Sheen, is Emilio Estevez

Pieceofpurplesky · 05/08/2021 19:00

Lucas and Emily

Not a fan of Estevan

Elouera · 05/08/2021 19:18

@WhoppingBigBackside

The actor, son of Martin Sheen, is Emilio Estevez
OMG! Appologies OP. I think I was clearly confusing Emilio Estevez with Gloria Estefan- neither of which are what you want to call you son I realise!

Anyways, I'd still pronounce it EST-eh-van.

WhoppingBigBackside · 05/08/2021 19:20

Worry not, Elouera, both actors are pleasant thoughts. Smile

FadoFado · 05/08/2021 19:35

Estevan is great and I'd pronounce it EH-steh-van, but if you're not keen on it you should keep looking. You have loads of time to find a name you both love.

user1493494961 · 05/08/2021 19:41

I would keep looking.

PlainJane1000 · 05/08/2021 19:46

I love Estevan! I'm too English for my child to pull it off but with your Portuguese heritage it's perfect!

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 05/08/2021 19:50

I'd instinctively pronounce Estevan like Gloria Estefan's surname but with a V sound. It's a nice name, but seems quite a different style to Emily if that matters.

I'd be tempted by something as classic as Emily - Edward (Eduardo), Frederick (Frederico) or Thomas (Tomas) perhaps. Or maybe something nearly as classic but internationally well used - Samuel, David, Daniel, Gabriel, Lucas, Arthur (Artur), Louis (Luis) etc.

Or maybe you could convince your husband on international Alexander if you used a different nn than Alex?

ActonSquirrel · 05/08/2021 19:51

Why exhaust yourself

You don't need to choose right now. You don't need a name ready before birth.

ActonSquirrel · 05/08/2021 19:52

Your daughter doesn't have a Portuguese name so I wouldn't for the boy.

I'd go classic like your Dds lovely name

Greenandcabbagelooking · 05/08/2021 20:06

I looked up popular Portuguese names, then picked any that work well in English. Emily doesn't sound overly Portuguese, so I think your son needs a name in a similar vein.

Gabriel
Lucas
Rafael
Daniel
David
Leonardo or Leo
Isaac

luciasanta · 05/08/2021 20:13

My favourite would indeed be Estevan - I would spontanously pronounce it es-TEH-van but would happily be corrected.

Henrique is wonderful too, that would be my second favourite!

Of yours I think Jacob is very cute.

Good luck x

LikeMummyLikeDaughter · 06/08/2021 17:32

We thought about all the names I have read through the replies, the thing is we have a big family with lots of cousins and all these names are taken. Even Henrique is my brother’s middle name, but my husband absolutely refuses (except Henrique) to name our son if there is someone else with that name in our family even if I love the name, like Lucas, Daniel, Gabriel, Leo, David, etc.
I pronounce es-TEH-van but I know some people will pronounce es-teh-VAAN, it doesn’t bother me that much but it is not as classical and known like Emily.
To be honest I feel bad about changing it now because my daughter keeps calling him Estevan and started telling everyone that’s his name…
Reading the replies made me feel better about the name… I just didn’t want people asking why my child has a Spanish name if we live in the UK. But maybe that’s just in my head.
Thank you everyone!!!

Don't like Estevan.

Rafael?
Luis?

MrsGilly1 · 07/08/2021 06:16

Hi,

You have a few more weeks to decide on a name yet and it may be that you see him before deciding on a name.

Although Estevan is a nice name - you've picked it quickly due to people asking and it a name you don't love.

Don't feel rushed into it - find a name you both love.

Jorge or Luis would go lovely with Emily I think too.

Jorge Estevan
Luis Estevan

jellyjellyinmybelly · 07/08/2021 07:47

I know an adult called Este (pronounced ST) who I think it's short for Estevan. I think his family are Portuguese. How do you feel about that nickname? Ps I really like the name

Enko · 07/08/2021 11:10

I like Estefan and I think it will work in English too
