Pronunciation of Ruthven

Does anyone have a definitive answer on how to pronounce Ruthven, or if you know a Ruthven how do they pronounce it?

It's a name I've always liked for a boy and have heard it pronounced Ruh-thven and Roo-ven. Mentioned it to DH and he thought it was Ruth-ven (like the girls' name Ruth) The internet seems to indicate it is 'Rivven'

So that's us up to 4 possible pronunciations Grin Wondering if the hive mind of MN had a view?

If anyone has a suggestion of anything similar I'd be interested. It's not a popular view on MN but I really like the Scottish surnamey, place-namey kind of style. Our first DS has a similar style of name - along the lines of Nairn.

Ruthven Street in Glasgow is pronounced Ruh-thven with a short U sound.

FadoFado · 05/08/2021 11:21

I think Corran would work well as a boy's name.

Toddlerteaplease · 05/08/2021 11:23

My sister just gets called Roof. It's weird when I people call her Ruth.

MarisPiper92 · 05/08/2021 11:24

I've only ever heard it as "Rivven".

FadoFado · 05/08/2021 11:25

And Coll and Taran are nice too.

Maybe not Ecclefechan.

HopeClearwater · 05/08/2021 11:26

Don’t give your baby a name that no one knows how to pronounce.

BluebellsareBlue · 05/08/2021 11:34

Auchtermuchty? Milngavie? That's actually pronounced millguy

Pogostemon · 05/08/2021 11:36

Riven. It’s Riven.

Dontevernamechange · 05/08/2021 11:42

Riven

Dontevernamechange · 05/08/2021 11:45

How about

Culross
Strachan
Finzean

?

Laquila · 05/08/2021 11:45

I've never seen it before but I like it, regardless of how it's pronounced 😂

I think I'd have assumed a sort of Reuven pronunciation, similar to the Hebrew name spelt that way. Interested to hear it's Rivven. I really like it!

Velvetbee · 05/08/2021 11:46

Rivven
Knew a lovely one.

ApolloandDaphne · 05/08/2021 11:47

@FadoFado

Ruthven Street in Glasgow is pronounced Ruh-thven with a short U sound.
That's how I would pronounce it.
334bu · 05/08/2021 11:47

Ruh/thven up here in Scotland.

334bu · 05/08/2021 11:48

Sorry cross post

emmathedilemma · 05/08/2021 11:58

I wouldn't have known how to pronounce it and I'm in Scotland!
Coll
Harris
Lewis
Stirling
Blair
Atholl (not as a middle name to Blair though Grin)
Fraser
Arran
Campbell
Erskine
Hamilton
Clyde
Leith
Ramsay
Gregor
Murdo / Murdoch
Wallace
Glen
Douglas

334bu · 05/08/2021 12:02

If you really want to confuse people name the child Menzies.

GoAwayCat · 05/08/2021 12:07

Blair-Atholl it is. Or maybe Blair-Drummond? Grin

Doesn't seem like there is consensus even among the Scots. Never mind.

Thanks for the list emmathedilemma. My favourite is Ramsay and it sounds good with our surname, but apparently that was a baddy in Game of Thrones so DH refuses to consider it!

How can you like a name that you don't know how to pronounce and has 4 different pronunciations to choose from? What do you like about it?!

I like the way it looks, I like the general style, and I like the Ruh-thven pronunciation. I'm just aware that not everyone might pronounce it that way and I wondered what others thought.

There are loads of names with varying pronunciations, see the thousand threads about Maya, Mila etc.

BingBongToTheMoon · 05/08/2021 12:17

Definitely Riven in Scotland.

1940s · 05/08/2021 12:26

Unless you and your husband have full conviction as to how to pronounce the name of steer very clear

1940s · 05/08/2021 12:28

Whilst many names can be pronounced differently, most parents choose one with a variation they want to use. Ie Maya as My-ah

GoAwayCat · 05/08/2021 12:30

Do you have any thoughts on the actual pronunciation of Ruthven, 1940s? Because that's what my thread was about.

How can you want to choose a name that even you as the parent doesn't know how to pronounce it?
