The name is spelt "Shelley" but the intended pronciation would be "Shell Lee".
I don't like it, makes me cringe and screams pretentious.
Thoughts?

I think it would be difficult to get that pronunciation for Shelley to stick.

minitwister · 01/08/2021 18:53

I've said the name over and over, and I don't understand how Shelley is different to Shell Lee...

girlmom21 · 01/08/2021 19:00

Do you mean you'd want a pause between Shell and Lee? I think you'd have to double barrel it to make it stick but it's a weird name.

LemonRoses · 01/08/2021 19:02

Oh dear

Aquamarine1029 · 01/08/2021 19:04

Horrible. I have heard it used as a nn for Michelle.

Scubalubs87 · 01/08/2021 19:06

@minitwister me too. Everyone with my accent would say shell lee - but with no pause between the syllables or stress on the second L.

JamieFrasersBigSwingingKilt · 01/08/2021 19:10

That name is a lot of things but pretentious it isn't.

FriedasCarLoad · 01/08/2021 19:12

I'd say it to rhyme with "jelly" (RP accent).

I find it awkward to say with equal emphasis on each syllable, and therefore a bit irritating; I'd try to not let that show to the person, but I'd secretly judge their parents Grin

fallfallfall · 01/08/2021 19:13

How is it different than Shelly? A pause? Like Michelle Lee without the Mi bit?

Ilikecheeseontoast · 01/08/2021 19:19

It’s weird. If the parents want it pronounced Shell-Lee then they need to spell it as such. It’s an awful name though, sorry!

miltonj · 01/08/2021 19:20

Shelly is nice. Shell-Lee is stupid and doesn't flow, but Each to their own.

ILoveShula · 01/08/2021 19:55

They could spell it Sheleigh

Ghosttile · 01/08/2021 20:01

I don’t think Shelly is pretentious, however you pronounce it.

Soubriquet · 01/08/2021 20:02

I hope it’s Shelley as one word rather than Shell-Lee as a double barrelled name

I mean, Shelley to me, is pronounced like Michelle without the Mi and an e on the end so it makes sense if it’s the former

Cbeebiesrehab · 01/08/2021 20:04

I don’t really understand OP. Is this an existing child? To me Shelley and Shelly would be said the same? I don’t think it’s a pretentious name at all.

Marcipex · 01/08/2021 20:08

No one is going to get it right.

dementedma · 01/08/2021 20:10

I'm Michelle. My future MIL, who was horrible, said" Do people call you Shelley?".
I said " Not twice"

EspressoDoubleShot · 01/08/2021 20:12

Shell lee bears no connection to Shelley. No one will use your preferred pronunciation

Standrewsschool · 01/08/2021 20:14

Not quite sure what you are trying to say.

Areyou saying it’s to be pronounced as two separate words, ie Shell. Lee, or are you saying it’s being pronounced as Shellee, as one word. If the former, the poor lass will spend a lifetime of correcting people. If the latter, then that’s the only way I know it’s pronounced.

Crockof · 01/08/2021 20:15

Do you mean it's pronounced Shell..pause..Lee?

Standrewsschool · 01/08/2021 20:15

And who wants to use this name? If it’s someone else, then their choice.

Crockof · 01/08/2021 20:16

StAndrew explained it better.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 01/08/2021 20:53

If she wanted a pause between the syllables, I would have assumed it was spelt with a hyphen. Because Percy Bysshe Shelley was so famous, I think most people would automatically say Shelley like Kelly or Jelly - it will be hard to get another pronunciation to stick imo.
