Name that sounds better vs name that means more?

Hi all,

I'm struggling to choose a middle name for my daughter. I'm thinking either:

Maisie Grace Marshall
or
Maisie Teresa Marshall

Grace is my grandmother's name (although we weren't close) and is also my middle name and my niece's middle name. I think it flows better and the initials sound better.

However I'd like to give her my mum's name as a middle - it would mean a lot to her, just not sure if it's a bit of a mouthful and doesn't sound as good?

Just not sure what's going to matter more in the long run. Thoughts?

Thanks :)

I think Maisie Grace sounds too much like Amazing Grace.

I'd use either Maisie Teresa or Maisie Teresa Grace, as it's nice to have that family link through both names. You might regret it if you don't use both.

Maisie Theresa Grace sounds lovely !

I have the exact same dilemma with my son’s middle name. Due in just over a week and we still haven’t come to a conclusion on it. My partner wants it to be his family’s often used middle name (which does sound best with the first name and flows) but I want it to be my grandpa’s name who we lost earlier this year. His name definitely doesn’t flow as well or sound as good with the first name but it’s hardly ever used after the initial telling people the full name bit. I think we’re most likely to go for the one with more meaning that doesn’t sound as good.. not sure if that helps you though, it’s a tough one

@Freshapples

I don't even know what most of my friends' middle names are! They're completely irrelevant to everyday life and better used as a nod to someone or something special. No one (apart from you) is ever going to address her with her middle name so go for the one you love the meaning of.
This is very true, it seems a big deal before the baby is born but it’s really only the first name anyone cares about

Good point!

I love Maisie Teresa Grace.

clickychicky · 29/07/2021 20:55

Maisie Theresa Grace sounds good
Or just Maisie Theresa.

Grace is a bit of a default middle name these days.

clickychicky · 29/07/2021 20:56

Teresa even sorry

floatingon · 29/07/2021 20:57

I like Maisie Teresa

JassyRadlett · 29/07/2021 21:00

Yes, I prefer your mum’s name as a middle name too. And don’t underestimate what it will mean to her - one of my boys has my dad’s name as his middle name and I was surprised how pleased my gruff, unsentimental dad was over it.

Grace is a bit of a default middle name these days.

Yes, Grace and Rose seem to be the equivalent of Jane and Louise 30-40 years ago.

Viviennemary · 29/07/2021 21:01

I'd drop the Maisie. Grace Teresa Marshall is much better IMHO.

Chunkymenrock · 29/07/2021 21:15

Sick to death of dull Grace. Teresa is much better.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 29/07/2021 21:18

I much prefer Maisie Theresa. I have my grandmother's first names as my middles (from both sides of the family) and I really like the family link. I appreciate Grace has family meaning for you too but imo Theresa is an underused classic, where as Grace is unfortunately so overused as a middle name now (like Rose and May) that it comes across as a bit dull sounding.

BlueberryFiend · 29/07/2021 23:05

@PaolaDiLorenzo

What about Terese/Therese ? It would still honour your mum.
This is the answer - thank you! Maisie Therese it is :)

Thanks everyone for your input.

Why Therese OP? That's not your mum's name and you wanted to use her name! Maisie Theresa is lovely. Maisie Therese is too rhymey.

BlueberryFiend · 30/07/2021 12:18

True, although my parents live in France and her friends over there call her Therese. Plus my siblings and I all have French names so it feels like a nice link for my daughter to have something French too.

Maisie Tess? - so similar to Mums name.

Elspethelf · 02/08/2021 09:18

It sounds like you really want to honor your mum and you should. If you don't like the way the name flows, you can use a variation or nickname of your mother's name instead of her full name. Or you can take the name meaning and find other names with the same meaning as a link to your mother.

I wondered why the name sounded so familiar!

Teresa from me too :)
