Posh, three/four syllable names for girls?

Names similar to Arabella, Ophelia, Clementine etc.

That’s all really!

Claudia, Evangeline etc came to mind as well but I don’t think they’re quite as ‘posh’, but maybe I’m wrong?

Also should add - this is for a piece of writing - so feel free to give all the suggestions you can. No real babies are being named here! The ‘posher’ the better.

I’m trying to remember the names of the girls that I was at boarding school with.

Thomasina was definitely posh.
There were lots of Victorias nn Tory not Vicky.
Felicity.
Harriet.
Bridget.

Thanks everyone! And - last question - how would you pronounce Clementine? ‘teen’ or ‘tyne’? I have heard that the former is the ‘posher’ way to pronounce it but can’t find validation for this online so wanted your opinions! Thanks!

I personally would pronounce it tyne, these days. I think teen was the old fashioned tradition English way, which isn't used much now. It was Winston Churchill's wife's name and she used to be Clementeen pronunciation.

A bit like how Sophia used to be said as Sofire in England. And Clara used to be more Claire-a.

Hope that helps. Smile

Whereas I’d pronounce it ‘teen’!

Mansplainee · 24/07/2021 14:25

I once met a Jocasta and thought that was the poshest name I’d ever heard.

Cassandra is another nice one, or Celia.

I'd pronounce in -teen in the UK, following the French Clémentine.

I think of -tyne as an American version, eg: "In a cavern, by a canyon, excavating for a mine, lived a miner, '49er, and his daughter Clementine."

Buppers · 24/07/2021 20:42

I'd pronounce it Clémentine, OP (i.e. Clay-mont-een). But I'd not use it as a 'posh girl' name for that reason - namely that it's a lovely name in French, but a bit not-sure-of-itself in English. Clemency might be an alternative?

I say teen.

That's how I pronounce the fruit. I am British (midlands), if that matters. I bet pronunciation is regional.

I am not posh though. But both my daughter's have make a frequently mentioned on this thread.
