nn Ziggy

What do you think?

dementedpixie · 19/07/2021 13:53

Ziggy is weird
Sigourney battles aliens
Surely nicknames evolve rather than being chosen beforehand

LobotomisedIceSkatingFan · 19/07/2021 13:56

No. It's the punchline of a 'dinnerladies' joke. I'm a fan of Weaver but it's not a particularly attractive name. And I fully agree ^ that you can't force a nickname.

Undersnatch · 19/07/2021 13:57

Really? Is this a Balonz thread?

Bamaluz · 19/07/2021 14:02

Awful

GlitterBiscuits · 19/07/2021 14:06

That's not even Sigourney Weavers real name.

I bet no one calls her Ziggy

TatianaBis · 19/07/2021 14:13

Bit unwieldy - but I like the French name Sigolène (pronounced len).

Yutes · 19/07/2021 14:14

Siggy is a Scandinavian name, if you like that in its own right ?

SirenSays · 19/07/2021 14:16

Ziggy sounds like a children's TV character. You can't say Sigourney without hearing Weaver.

BillyShears · 19/07/2021 14:17

Hard no.

NuffSaidSam · 19/07/2021 14:19

'It's the punchline of a 'dinnerladies' joke.'

That's exactly what I thought. I can't not hear it in that accent!

I think it's an ugly sounding name.

Ziggy is a bit of a stretch so you could probably stretch other names to also make Ziggy work if you wanted.

LobotomisedIceSkatingFan · 19/07/2021 14:29

Mind you, the other work experience kid had it worse . . .

Bren - "What was it? Derwent?"
Jean - "What's the story behind that then, Derwent?"
Derwent - "Dunno."
Jean - "Have you never asked your mother about it?"
Derwent - "She works nights."

Genius.

IVflytrap · 19/07/2021 15:05

Sigourney is OK, but I think everyone will immediately think of Weaver, as it is so linked to her. I think you're more likely to get Siggy than Ziggy.

How about Sidonie as an alternative?

KirstenBlest · 19/07/2021 15:27

Weaver would be better than Sigourney

NuffSaidSam · 19/07/2021 16:18

'Bren - "What was it? Derwent?"
Jean - "What's the story behind that then, Derwent?"
Derwent - "Dunno."
Jean - "Have you never asked your mother about it?"
Derwent - "She works nights."

Genius.'

😂 Going to have to watch Dinnerladies now

Terrazzo · 19/07/2021 18:02

I don’t get that Derwent joke 😭

Re Sigourney, I find it nicer to say than to look at. I MUCH prefer Sidonie, so I suggest that, but you won’t get Ziggy from that. Why not just call her Ziggy if that’s your choice?

CanofCant · 19/07/2021 18:16

@NuffSaidSam

'Bren - "What was it? Derwent?" Jean - "What's the story behind that then, Derwent?" Derwent - "Dunno." Jean - "Have you never asked your mother about it?" Derwent - "She works nights."

Genius.'

Same here, it's an absolute classic that can withstand many repeat viewings.

Babs: 'There's two ways to Urmston'

Stan: 'No there's not, there's three.'

LobotomisedIceSkatingFan · 19/07/2021 18:54

"I was going to go on 'Mastermind' but I can't sit on leather . . . "

HPLikecraft · 19/07/2021 19:42

Just hanging around hoping someone explains the Derwent joke!

MadeOfStarStuff · 19/07/2021 20:47

I used to know one, I’m not sure Ziggy is a natural nickname, more likely to get Sig or Siggy which sounds like Cig/Ciggie from cigarette

BackforGood · 19/07/2021 21:23

Not keen, and also agree that nicknames evolve once the child is here - rarely what you expect.
Though I also agree with Madeof in that I wouldn't want to be hearing "cig/Ciggie"

Myothercarisalsoshit · 19/07/2021 21:28

Sigourney Weaver took the name from a character in The Great Gatsby. I think it's a great name.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 19/07/2021 22:15

Too associated with the actress for me, and like pp suggest I think she will get Siggy rather than Ziggy (I quite like Siggy though - a quirky, Scandi feel, but it does feel like a nn to me).

If you like unusual S names, what about Sunniva? I've always thought that was pretty. Or if it's the Z sound you like, then how about Xenia?

JulesRimetStillGleaming · 19/07/2021 23:43

I went to a live recording of Dinnerladies Grin

Suzi888 · 19/07/2021 23:45

Siggy more likely than Ziggy.

KatherineJaneway · 19/07/2021 23:52

Sigourney = Weaver

Not even her real namely she's actually called Susan
