Lila a classic?

Would you consider Lila/ Lilah (pronounced Lie-la with long i sound) to be a classic/ timeless name that could sound professional on an adult? We are considering Lila June. This feels like the most unusual name to us on our list because we typically like longer, traditional, feminine names like Emily, Natalie, Olivia, and Annelise. I think Lila sounds fresh, bright, and fun for a young girl that fits in well with other short popular names right now (Ella, Lily, Emma...) but I feel a little nervous using it for some reason. Any thoughts? I'm not too concerned about popularity and I'm in the U.S. if that matters.

It’s not a classic name

Lila and similar names are popular at present

It is a nice name and would suit a baby, girl or adult woman.

No, what about Lilly, Lillian, Eliza?

Lily and Eliza are diminutives of Elizabeth. Elizabeth is classic but the diminutives aren't.

Lillian - I wouldn't say it was but it's been around a long time

A name does not need to be consistently in the top 100 to be a classic.

Ezra - I think it would not have been widely used outside religious communities. until the past few years, so not a classic.

I just think lilo.

I like Lily, Lilia, and Delilah.

TatianaBis · 13/07/2021 18:32

Lily comes from Latin Lilium/Lilia.

Ellmau · 13/07/2021 18:34

Neither classic nor timeless, but a perfectly good name which is fine for an adult.

DaisyWaldron · 13/07/2021 18:39

I like it - it's DD's middle name, who was named after her great grandmother, who was named after her grandmother, so while not a "classic" name, it's certainly a name with history.

DamsonJammyBastard · 13/07/2021 18:43

I wouldn't say it's a classic in the UK but may well be in Iran and some Arabic countries.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 13/07/2021 21:53

I'd forgot about Lucy and Louise/a! Agree they feel like classics too.

I didn't think there would be that much debate about Laura since it's been widely used since the middle ages (think Petrach), was still top 100 well into the early 20th C and makes pretty much every classic name list (just a shame it was so popular in the 1980's!)

Maybe Lila could a classic of the future though OP? - it'll take time to see if it continues with greater use or falls again.

Regardless of how long it's been around, Laura just doesn't feel like a timeless classic to me, no doubt due to its overuse in the 1980s.

Magpie1976 · 13/07/2021 22:31

I pronounce Lila as Leela, a bit like Lisa. Beautiful name.

Regardless of how you view it, it is considered a classic.

It was overused in the 1980s but so were some other classic names like Sarah, Emma, Rebecca and Victoria.

DaisyWaldron · 14/07/2021 13:56

I think the Lilas in my family started off as Elizabeths, but it's definitely been Lila pronounced LYE-la for centuries.

Cinderella80 · 14/07/2021 13:57

Emma, Rebecca and Victoria are lovely names though, doubt that Laura will ever make a come back. It's really harsh sounding like Karen, Sharon, Donna etc. Horrid name.

DamsonJammyBastard · 14/07/2021 15:21

Laura has been in and out of fashion over more than one century, of course it will come back at some point.

DamsonJammyBastard · 14/07/2021 15:22

I think Olivia is the Laura equivalent at the moment.

HarrietHairbrush · 14/07/2021 15:24

She was a mean rich girl in sweet valley high

Geamhradh · 14/07/2021 15:39

Lila definitely not classic.
Laura definitely is.
I'd agree about Olivia being the modern Laura.
Names which 40-50 years ago would have been seen as a bit posh, now decanted down to us not posh folk.
I remember meeting my first ever Charlotte and Hannah and being thrilled, because they were so unusual and "posh" Grin would have been about 45 years ago.

peachgreen · 14/07/2021 15:47

I have a Lyla and there's billions of 'em Grin I still like it as a name but I sometimes wish we'd gone for something more unusual!

soooooooG · 14/07/2021 16:45

I loved Futurarma so definitely a classic to me.

Bluntness1OO · 14/07/2021 17:15

I don't think a name necessarily needs to be ancient in order to be timeless. Lila has a classic, timeless quality to it. Laura is old but wont have the longevity of names like Emma, Jessica, Megan, Charlotte, Lisa, 5Nicola, Oliva which have never really went out of fashion

name6785 · 14/07/2021 17:19

My great grandmother was called Lila so I wouldn't say it's "trendy" or modern, clearly been around a long time.

lncessantnamechanga · 14/07/2021 17:24

Love Lila

SingingInTheShithouse · 14/07/2021 19:25

No, not at all
