Short welsh names

We're from South Wales and are looking for an easily pronounced short welsh name that isn't too popular here.

Nothing too of our era like Sian, Cerys, Carys, Rhiannon, Lewys, Tomos, Geraint, Gerwyn etc as they feel a bit dated to us now as they were our peers at school.

If it wasn't so popular here, we would've loved to use Gwen for a girl.

One or two syllables please. Fire away 😄

Cadi/Catrin, Seren and Lowri spring to mind, although Seren is very popular and Lowri might be a bit dated. For boys, Rhys, Macsen, Rhodri, Evan, Rhidian.

Or Ffion.

A Welsh colleague of mine has a son called Emer. I may have the spelling wrong, but it's said to rhyme with fair.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 13/07/2021 13:04

Really like Nia - easily pronounced by everyone. And Eira is lovely and popular enough now that I think many people outside Wales know how to pronounce it too. Anwen's also nice imo, but maybe too traditional for your taste?

I love Macsen and Ioan for a boy (although possibly Ioan could be mispronounced outside Wales) - and also Huw and Emrys, but they are probably too old fashioned for you?

I have a Cerys so very biased towards that lol.

I love Hywel. I knew one once who was just lovely.

Owen is also a great name.

Mushypeasandchipstogo · 13/07/2021 14:20

Emlyn or Owain for a boy
Had a great aunt called Menna but I’m not sure of the spelling!

yknaps · 13/07/2021 14:22

Mabli! ❤️

Thanks so much everyone. Hard to explain what we like as I think Gethin, Macsen and Griff are brilliant names... I like older names but not ones that feel a bit welsh 80/90's dated if that makes any sense at all.

We aren't totally set on having a welsh name but wanted some ideas that may fit for us

Love the name Gethin.

Mol1628 · 13/07/2021 14:37

I love Llyr

Tangeloincognito · 13/07/2021 14:41

Welsh names are by nature 'dated'

They come from long, rich tradition and history.

They tend not to be trendy unless you start making names up, eg Seren.

Very outing but I have a Lilwen!

OverTheWater · 13/07/2021 15:56

My faves are probably all quite dated as I love Geraint and Euros!

Iestyn
Bryn (origin a bit suspect I think, may not be strictly Welsh)
Hywel

Mair (surely a granny name due a comeback)
Catrin

AuntyFungal · 13/07/2021 16:02

Bran

DacwMamYnDwad · 13/07/2021 17:41

@OverTheWater, Bryn is definitely Welsh. It's the Welsh word for hill. Probably not due a comeback just yet but nice.

DacwMamYnDwad · 13/07/2021 17:43

Hefin
Caio
Gwion
Aled

Ynyr
Rhun
Siôr
Siarl
Euros
