I like it, I prefer it to amelia

SophieSellerman · 10/07/2021 22:38

I'd be put off by the inevitable "Ammerly" pronunciation. It's a bit like Adelaïde. It's gorgeous in French, but not so in English.

I'd go for Amelia instead.

Cbeebiesrehab · 10/07/2021 23:17

Much nicer than Amelia and despite a lot of people saying it’s popular I’ve only ever met one and she’s about 8 now. Must be a regional thing.

Cowbells · 10/07/2021 23:27

I know three Amelies (though one is spelled Amerleigh) No one has ever called them Amelia.

sarah13xx · 10/07/2021 23:50

Yes! Love it

sarah13xx · 10/07/2021 23:50

Also only know of one and don’t actually know them

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 11/07/2021 00:19

Very pretty, but perhaps also very slightly dated (it first became popular 20 years ago when the film came out and is now on a downward trend so may "date" ). However that does mean your DD has a better chance of being the only one in her class or even school, which might also be nice.

Alternatives could be the more classic (but popular) Emily, or fellow French beauties Sylvie, Coralie and Rosalie.

RamItBunty · 11/07/2021 00:26

I like it
Pronounced Ah. Ma.Lee

FlumpyPoodle · 11/07/2021 05:00

I hated that twee little film so much I can't see beyond that. It feels a bit 2010.

FayeFayeFayeFayeFaye · 11/07/2021 07:24

It’s lovely but very popular especially with all the Amelias that are around too.

17caterpillars1mouse · 11/07/2021 08:55

I like it. Our neighbour has a lovely 2 year old Amelie, which makes me like the name more.

There were a few Amelie's at baby groups when dd5 was a baby but there are no Amelie's in her year at school, nor at dd2s room at nursery

Beeeeeeeeeeeeeep · 11/07/2021 08:59

I think it's a bit overdone and I don't like it in the English accent but it's objectively quite a pretty name

SemperIdem · 11/07/2021 09:46

It only sounds nice with a French accent.

cariadlet · 11/07/2021 09:51

I think it's pretty but sounds a bit pretentious unless you're French.

If there's no French connection, then I'd prefer Amelia or Emily.

NannyR · 11/07/2021 09:51

Just out of interest, how should it be pronounced? The Amelies I've known (no French connections) have always pronounced it similar to Emily but with an A sound.

Marcipex · 11/07/2021 09:57

Ammerley is the only pronunciation I’ve ever heard.
How should it sound?

SheABitSpicyToday · 11/07/2021 10:00

It’s pronounced Ah-meh-lee.

Dontdripme · 11/07/2021 10:15

Theres alot of them

Cowbells · 11/07/2021 10:15

@RamItBunty

I like it Pronounced Ah. Ma.Lee
Round here it gets pronounced A-may-lee
KirstenBlest · 11/07/2021 10:16

Much nicer in a french accent.

A name that became very popular after the film came out
The stats are <a class="break-all" href="https://names.darkgreener.com/#amelienames.darkgreener.com/#amelie" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">here

Probably on a downward now, so will suggest the name of somewhere older than she is.

Emily is nicer. I don't like Amelia.

If you like it, use it.

Frazzledd · 11/07/2021 10:19

@SheABitSpicyToday

It’s pronounced Ah-meh-lee.
Yes, but say it quick it's Ammalee...

I love the pronunciation debate, it'll sound different depending on your accent, the same as all names...and words....!

Chilldonaldchill · 11/07/2021 11:15

I really like it.
It's pretty, classy and classic.

Chachachawoo · 11/07/2021 12:46

Love it
Ours was called bambam as baby bc her older cousin couldn't say it properly

Peach01 · 13/07/2021 13:03

I like it Smile
