Thoughts?

Not made it up, it's from the bible. How would you pronounce it?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Kanaloa · 08/07/2021 23:44

I would pronounce it Dam-a-ris, phonetically. It’s unusual and not my cup of tea.

NuffSaidSam · 08/07/2021 23:45

Dam-uh-ris

I wouldn't use a name that started with Damn.

NotStayingIn · 08/07/2021 23:48

I would pronounce it Da-Mar-is and I quite liked it.

But hearing others would pronounce it Dam-a-ris is making me reconsider. That doesn't sound all that good to me.

PerveenMistry · 08/07/2021 23:54

In the US it's pronounced

Duh-mare-ess.

I like it.

BackforGood · 09/07/2021 00:02

Dam-arris (2nd bit rhyming with 'Harris')

Not keen on the fact he'd be called 'Damn' all the time

JohnnyLuLus · 09/07/2021 00:07

Duh marris

Mwnci123 · 09/07/2021 00:19

I like it but think I am probably saying it wrong in my head.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 09/07/2021 01:18

Lovely - sounds strong, elegant and unusual/exotic imo. I knew one at school, she pronounced it "Dah -marr -iss".

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 09/07/2021 01:20

Oh and the way she pronounced it, there was no "damn" sound - from what I remember probably the most emphasis was on the middle syllable.

DramaAlpaca · 09/07/2021 01:39

I'd pronounce it da-MAHH-riss, with the stress on the second syllable.

I quite like it, it's striking and strong.

CakesOfVersailles · 09/07/2021 05:17

Without having heard it spoken before, I would think

"Duh-marr-iss" with the emphasis on the 'm.'

I quite like it (if that's how it's pronounced).

Dany165 · 09/07/2021 05:41

Best friend's name. She now goes by a nickname (Daisy) as she got 'Damn' as a nickname in primary school. She pronounces it Da-ma-ris (phonetically) but the majority of people pronounce it as Da- MARR-is.

peaceinourtime · 09/07/2021 06:16

Nice and unusual . It reminds me of the nurse in Getting On

HelloDulling · 09/07/2021 06:57

DAM-a-ris.

It is, or was, a lingerie brand.

ShowOfHands · 09/07/2021 06:59

It'd make a cracking F&B shade.

NoraLuka · 09/07/2021 08:34

I had a book as a child with a Damaris in it. It was set in the olden days (sorry can’t get any more accurate than that!) and she helped a smuggler (or a spy?) to escape.

Anyway it’s a lovely name, not a clue how it should be pronounced though!

FindingMeno · 09/07/2021 08:37

Beautiful beautiful!
Da -MARR- is.

Chilldonaldchill · 09/07/2021 08:37

I know one (middle aged Greek lady) and she says da - MARR - iss.
I think it sounds nicer than it looks.

NannyR · 09/07/2021 08:39

I would pronounce it with the emphasis on the second syllable da-marr-is.

MadisonAvenue · 09/07/2021 08:43

I’d say Da-marris (to sound like Harris or like Niles Crane’s wife Maris).

Ellmau · 09/07/2021 18:53

A lovely name. Pretty without being frilly.

I would pronounce DAM-a-riss.

autumnboys · 09/07/2021 18:57

Phillipa Carr, Daughters of England series, maybe? That’s where I first read the name, was determined I would use it for a girl, but Dh not a fan & in any case we had three boys.

I like it. Unusual & pretty.

Classica · 09/07/2021 19:08

Sounds quite windswept and dramatic (I can imagine one in Poldark being all sultry and cliff wandering) but it's a lovely name. I'd put the emphasis on the second syllable.

hawkehurstgang · 10/07/2021 06:07

I like it even more after seeing it has a windswept and dramatic vibe, I think I like that in a name Grin Thanks everyone for the opinions! I'm always surprised it's so uncommon!
