Baby boy due this month.

What does everyone think of Winston?

We have been set on this name since around 16 weeks and called the baby it the entire time but haven't told any of our family as we don't want them to try and persuade us other wise but I'd like to hear at least some others opinions on it!

His first name will be after his dad but we would call him by his middle name which would be Winston. I know this isn't for everyone but either way first name will be babies dads and middle name used as first name whatever we go.

I love Winnie and Win as well as shortened versions.

I've loved it the entire time but starting to worry it's too uncommon and people will look at us abit Hmm

I don't love Winston tbh. It sounds either like you're a bit jingoistic, or a name for a dog. It's not terrible, but if you're having a wobble there are better ones out there.

Why aren't you going to put the name that you want to give him first, and use his dad's as a MN? DH is known by his middle name for different reasons, and it's a pain in the arse.

HoldingTheDoor · 08/07/2021 17:28

Winston is dreadful.

Kollamoolitumarellipawkyrollo · 08/07/2021 17:30

Chill Winston is my first thought.

I don’t like it at all really. Also going by middle name can be problematic for a variety of reasons.

EssentialHummus · 08/07/2021 17:31

I don’t love it but it’s fine imo. But the first / middle name thing is a serious pain - if he’s going to be known as Winston (or whatever else) day to day, that needs to be his first name.

DinaofCloud9 · 08/07/2021 17:36

Ooh I don't like it at all. Winnie is even worse.

KirstenBlest · 08/07/2021 17:38

I really like it. Win as a nn.

I have a friend called Winston and he's about the nicest person you could know.

Lockdownbear · 08/07/2021 17:40

Winston it's OK. I'm not daft on Winnie, that sounds very female to me.

What's the first name, I'd be tempted to swap them so the middle name is after his Dad.

KirstenBlest · 08/07/2021 17:42

I wouldn't put the known as name at the beginning, because people tend to assume that that is the known as name, and also because something like George Winston Surname looks like Winston might be a surname middle name. (cf Camilla P Bowles, Helena B Carter)

Wouldyoudothesame · 08/07/2021 17:51

I know a 3 yo Winston and a 5yo bit he goes by Win which I like. Winnie I don't like lol but that doesn't really matter. If you love it go for it, I don't think it's all that uncommon x

reallyworriedjobhunter · 08/07/2021 17:53

What about Wynne

Aquamarine1029 · 08/07/2021 17:55

Give the baby his own first name.

Beeeeeeeeeeeeeep · 08/07/2021 17:57

Winston is ok, but NOT win or Winnie those are girls names!
I also really hate it when people call kids by their middle names. Why???

Elune · 08/07/2021 17:58

I know too many people's pets called Winston! And Winnie would always make me assume the person was a girl, and probably short for Winifred. Wilfred/Wilf? It's really just a personal thing though, not a name I like but the names I like won't be ones others necessarily like either!

Anniecott · 08/07/2021 18:01

I love it.
And on the being known by your second name my beloved Nan who died 13 yrs ago 'Olive' was apparently actually Bridget, Olive was her second name, even my mum her own daughter didn't know this, that's how little confusion it caused through her life.
Your child, your choice.
Go with your gut.
Good luck.

Fivemoreminutes1 · 08/07/2021 18:03

To be honest, if I heard someone calling “Winston” in Sainsbury’s (or wherever), yes I’d be a bit Hmm

AvantGardening · 08/07/2021 18:05

I like Winston. Use it. Wobbles are normal.

amillionrosepetals · 08/07/2021 18:09

I'm known by my middle name, so are my siblings. I was always told that it was a Catholic thing at the time (1950s) - you could only be baptised if you had a saint's name and my middle name isn't a saint's name (a tradition I have carried on lol) so I had to have a saint's name as my first name.

Phantasmo · 08/07/2021 18:18

I think it's okay (although a big 'no' to Winnie as a nickname). Aside from Churchill it reminds me of older Caribbean man. It's a big solid name but I'm sure he'll be able to carry it well.

(just don't call him Winnie!)

Odile13 · 08/07/2021 18:54

I wouldn’t think anything of it if I heard someone calling out the name Winston at nursery or wherever.

I’m not keen on the nickname Winnie as it sounds feminine but Win is fine.

I don’t like deliberately picking a middle name which will be used instead of their first name or having the same name as the father. That’s just personal preference though.

Cookiebox · 08/07/2021 18:57

Sorry it's a terrible name

AlmostSummer21 · 08/07/2021 18:59

Sorry, I really don't like it and just think of Churchill.

In the U.K., using a middle name as your name is a pain in the arse. Why are you choosing to lay that on your child?

MySocalledLoaf · 08/07/2021 18:59

Winston is fine, use it if you like it. Don’t set him up for a lifetime of being called the wrong name, though, use his name as his first name.

bloominglovelyorange · 08/07/2021 19:00

I love it. It's on my list. I think it is a grower too. At first I wasn't keen but I love it now

Tulips15 · 08/07/2021 19:01

It sounda like a dogs nams to me.
Winnie is worse.

As for the usingmiddle name as known name- My DD is known as her middle name.
This was done to honour DP fily tradition and also as DD's GF, passed away 2 weeks after her birth.
DD does have to correct people such as the GP, Medical and dental stafg, school staff.
Then its no issue really

110APiccadilly · 08/07/2021 19:04

It does make me think of either Churchill or 1984. However, I quite like Win as a short form.
