Maxine.

What do you think?

Yeah, along with Myra. 😬

EmmaGellerGreen · 06/07/2021 22:41

Carr. No

SmidgenofaPigeon · 06/07/2021 22:42

Loads of girls still get called Rose and you wouldn’t immediately think West though 🤷🏻‍♀️

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 06/07/2021 22:48

Nope, probably not for another 20 years when the current Maxine's become Great- grandmothers. Kind of a shame as the nn Max is very cool on a girl imo. But all the "ine" names feel a bit mumsy still I think (apart from maybe Josephine, Caroline, Madeline, Adeline, Clementine and Emmeline which have somehow escaped a bit due to international use or Victorian or Royal imagery)

StevieNix · 06/07/2021 22:49

I think Myra (when taken without the obvious connotations) is actually quite a pretty name but I can’t see it making a comeback.
Maxine is the same - too much of a negative connotation

DramaAlpaca · 06/07/2021 22:50

Of course not.

freelions · 06/07/2021 22:50

No

In another 15 yrs maybe

Ikeameatballs · 06/07/2021 22:52

I never think of Maxine Carr when I hear Maxine, I think of my lovely work colleague! But I would think of it as an unusual name for a baby.

bumblenbean · 06/07/2021 22:53

In and of itself I actually really like Myra. Sadly though it’s impossible to avoid the obvious connection…

Maxine - I’m ambivalent. Wouldn’t say it’s due a comeback. What about Roxanne? Vaguely similar?!

Enko · 07/07/2021 08:51

I like Maxine but I think it will be a few years

Skybluepinkgiraffe · 07/07/2021 08:55

It's a name I never really liked. I tend to expect Maxine to have a sister called Denise.
I wouldn't mind Max as a nickname though.

I do 🤷🏻‍♀️
Skybluepinkgiraffe · 07/07/2021 08:57

It's never crossed by mind to associate names with criminals. Unless it's both first name and surname. That would be awkward!

ILoveShula · 08/07/2021 12:04

I know a couple of Maxines, both adults.
I quite like it, in that it's a bit different.

I think the parents of one thought they were going to have a boy called Max.

motogogo · 08/07/2021 13:08

I just had to Google Maxine Carr - didn't mean anything to me but I wasn't in the U.K. then. I know several Maxines and there's famous (nice) ones too. Myra however is unusual so very different

BunnyRuddington · 08/07/2021 13:49

I always associate Maxine with Maxine Peake might have a bit of a girl crush on her though Grin

Pemba · 08/07/2021 14:11

I don't like it, but not because of Maxine Carr. I don't think she is very significant. I just think Maxine is not a particularly attractive name. Sorry but it just doesn't seem very classy to me. Sounds like it should be French but in fact, it's not. I know someone who named their daughter Maxima recently, which is a bit better. I think the queen of the Netherlands is Maxima. Unfortunately, the person I know calls the little girl 'Max' for short, which I do think sounds very masculine. Max for a boy is much nicer.

As for Myra, I like it as a name, but obviously it is forever tainted in the UK by the association with Myra Hindley. That will take a long time to go away. I believe it is used in the USA though, obviously they don't have the same associations. It's strange, because I am pretty sure that if it were not for Hindley it would have been popular recently, it fits right in with other names that are currently popular, like Mila, Maya etc.

liverpoolgal82 · 08/07/2021 14:25

Maybe if you nicknamed her Maxxy (or spelt )Maxxie.

TheVanguardSix · 08/07/2021 14:30

My friend's DD is Maxine and he sister is Zelda. And Maxine is about 24 now. They're just so, so, so cool as well, the pair of them, and their names add to their character. I love the name Maxine.

TheVanguardSix · 08/07/2021 14:30

Sorry... not 24. The Maxine I know is 14!

Longdistance · 08/07/2021 14:42

My sil is a Maxine. She’s great, but she gets called Max.

olderthanyouthink · 08/07/2021 15:00

I'm 25, Maxine makes me think of Madame Maxine from Harry Potter. I don't know who Maxine Carr is... I googled, I know who Ian Huntley is.

Myra, I know Myra Hindley but I don't go straight to her.

Seesawmummadaw · 08/07/2021 15:01

It’s quite 80’s. Maybe in another twenty years it will be popular again.
It makes me think of corkscrew perms and leg warmers.

Beamur · 08/07/2021 15:06

I think Maxine Peake too who is very cool..
If you like it, use it. You might be slightly ahead of the curve. 80's names will be popular again.

adrianmolesmole · 08/07/2021 16:19

Not a fan. It's a very dated, 80s 'hard-faced' kind of name, I don't think it should come back at all!
