We've found out we're having a baby girl and Maeve is one of the names we both like. DH is Irish but we live in SE England.

I'm aware the name has got more popular recently and now appeared in the top 100 I think. I'm not too worried about that though.

Also realised Maeve is a character in Sex Education and another series is due be released later this year around the time she'll be born. Not overly keen on people thinking I've named my baby after a TV show! Do you think alot of people will make that connection? And does it really matter?!

Also thinking about other ideas for Irish girls names that work well in England with no major spelling difficulties. Unfortunately can't use Niamh, Orla or Erin because already taken by other family members.

Nuala

DramaAlpaca · 06/07/2021 20:59

Maeve is really lovely.

As for Nuala, dear God no. It's a very old fashioned name in Ireland and not in a good way.

Maeve is a lovely name....our daughter is India Maeve....Daddy is Punjabi so chose India. Other Irish girl 's names I loved were Aisling, Clodagh, Nessa and Caitlin. People targeting much better at pronunciation although my son..Darragh....still gets called Darren or Darrell! Agree Kuala is a bit old fashioned 😁

Maeve is lovely. I wouldn't worry about about a TV show (unless it's a Daenerys or Sansa type "invented" name which is too associated with a particular programme), and I don't think trendiness matters as much for a traditional name unless it suddenly gets very popular (say top 20/30).

Thank you for replies and lovely to hear lots of positive opinions!

Love the name Maeve, we find out the gender in a couple of weeks and I'm swaying towards Olivia Maeve 🥰 (provided partner agrees!)

Maeve is lovely, I wouldn’t worry about the sex education thing. I also like Aoife which is becoming more well known in the UK. Good luck.

Maeve is a gorgeous name personally I think the author Malvern Binchley whe I hear the name

twoofusburningmatches · 07/07/2021 10:18

I love Maeve. I’m pregnant too and it would be top of my list except I don’t think it goes with surname. When I think of the name, I think of the fierce warrior queen, with all her lovers and ready to take on any man on the battlefield. Same with Neasa. Both great names with great stories behind them!

CescaCesca · 07/07/2021 10:35

I love Irish names.
Maeve is beautiful.
Other names: Aoife, Saoirse, Grainne, Ciara.

Maura?
Morven?
Marsali?

KirstenBlest · 07/07/2021 11:33

I don't like Maeve. Too close to May and Eve, which are very popular.

If you like it, use it.

Irish first name and surname might be a bit too Irish, should that be an issue.

What exactly does "too Irish" mean?

The anti-Irish racism in England can be pretty bad but I really wouldn't discount a name for that reason.

Op - I love Maeve. It was a slightly old-fashioned name but has definitely had a revival. My preference is the Irish spelling (Maedbh) but I can understand why you would go for the anglicised spelling if you're living in England.

MackemLass79 · 07/07/2021 11:46

Eleanor it's my daughters middle name and her dad is Irish. Others I like are Una, Imogen, cara, aisling and aoife

BunnyRuddington · 07/07/2021 12:17

I know a couple of Maeves, I think it's a lovely name. It's probably growing in popularity just fir this reason.

Also know a very lovely 17yo Nuala Smile

I love Maeve.

KirstenBlest · 07/07/2021 12:59

Something like Sadhbh Ni Gallchobhair might imply that you were more than half Irish.

Apologies if that is your name or if I didn't get the spelling right.

twoofusburningmatches · 07/07/2021 13:11

@KirstenBlest I’m not sure I understand your point. Would it be a problem to imply the child is more than half Irish? What about a couple, where one was Irish and one was English, who called the baby something like Catherine Smith? Would that imply the child was more than half English? And would that be a bad thing?

TheVanguardSix · 07/07/2021 13:13

Wow. This is l like some Rick and Morty episode where some comment from the 1950s hurtles through a portal and slams into 2021 making a very hard landing.
