I think you’re asking the wrong group of people to be honest and the question would be better off on a french language forum

Luke0 · 06/07/2021 14:54

Carrotgarotte, I don't know the question I want to know it's more in other country than French how do think about the name Ange on boy ?

What I’m saying is, Ange is not a well-known name in English speaking countries. Therefore more people will answer that Leo is the nicer name purely because Leo is used in English speaking countries so it’s not really giving you a good indication of which name is better

Babyiskickingmyribs · 06/07/2021 15:04

If your son will spend time in English speaking schools, then I would avoid ´Ange’. If it’s just that you like to travel on holidays then I don’t think it matters. If it’s his middle name it doesn’t really matter either way, it won’t be used regularly.

Babyiskickingmyribs · 06/07/2021 15:05

This is a big problem with French boy’s names. They often sound very feminine in English.

AlexanderArnold · 06/07/2021 15:10

I think Ange is absolutely lovely for a little boy! No, as an English person in England I wouldn't use it, but as a French Japanese couple in France, why not?!

Vikingintraining · 06/07/2021 15:12

Ange, sounds lovely.

TatianaBis · 06/07/2021 15:45

Ange is no less cringe in French than Angel is in English.

Def Leo. In fact I would use Leopold in France.

hawkehurstgang · 06/07/2021 16:06

Leo

PattyPan · 06/07/2021 16:11

I wouldn’t use Leopold, makes me think of Leopold II of Belgium

BashStreet1 · 06/07/2021 16:13

I would never use Ange as it's the literal translation of Angel in French- I would not name a child Angel.

Also Ange in English is the short form of Angela (a ladies name).

So Leo is better but it is quite a popular and well used name.

TatianaBis · 06/07/2021 16:32

King Leopold is a bit random - there are far more interesting Leopolds than him - Mozart, Eyharts, von Auer.

I know a very cool goodlooking French Leopold.

PattyPan · 06/07/2021 16:41

I just make it a general rule not to use the names of people who famously committed genocide 🤷‍♀️

TatianaBis · 06/07/2021 17:10

Like Joseph?

TatianaBis · 06/07/2021 17:14

Doesn’t seem to have put people of Theodore or Arthur.

PattyPan · 06/07/2021 17:30

I wouldn’t use Joseph personally but ruled out all J names anyway: There are more other famous Josephs than Leopolds though so less problematic. I think Leopold II is probably the most famous Leopold at the moment especially in the context of BLM etc.

TatianaBis · 06/07/2021 18:31

What Joseph is more famous than Stalin or Mengele?

It’s all a bit try hard Patty. There are 1000s of Leopolds in Europe. Psychopathy has never put the British off Henry.

PattyPan · 06/07/2021 19:42

Joseph as in the husband of Mary in the Bible? Or he of technicolour dream coat?
I’m just saying that’s what I think of (and also to my more Germanic ears it’s a super old fashioned name up there with Wilhelm and Ernst). Leopold II is the top listing on Google for Leopold. Joseph comes up with a clothing brand.

TatianaBis · 06/07/2021 20:01

Joseph as in 70% of the world isn’t Christian?

Leopold is cool in France, where it’s quite popular.

Wolf is an elderly botanist in Germany, here it’s a footballer’s kid. Ive never met a German Ottilie under 70 but it’s a MN fav.

PattyPan · 06/07/2021 20:12

I still imagine more people have heard of Mary and Joseph than Mengele though, regardless of religion. Joseph with the coat is in the Torah and Quran as well.
Obviously you can feel free to use the name Leopold if you think it’s cool as can OP, I was just saying that I immediately think of the genocide guy which is an association I would want people to tell me about a name I liked 🤷‍♀️

Joolsin · 06/07/2021 20:19

I think Ange is a fab name, love the pronunciation and it goes beautifully with your surname.

girlmom21 · 06/07/2021 20:24

I don't like Ange if it's pronounced Onj. Stick with Leo

TatianaBis · 06/07/2021 20:25

Maybe they have, who gives a toss? More recent Josephs are famous genocidal maniacs either way. We were originally talking historical figures not religious myths.

PattyPan · 06/07/2021 20:51

I was just talking the general knee jerk/immediate thoughts type association rather than mentally listing people with the name. Like hearing Beatrix and immediately thinking Potter, that snap, not even conscious, association.
