Hello,
I'm in France and here the name Ange is not weird and girly name but I want to know in other how do you think? For you it's too much girly name or it could be still a boy name?

How is it pronounced

Saltyslug · 06/07/2021 06:11

Anj

Angh

Angie

Anjee

I haven't heard of the name. It sounds like the fairly common shortened version of Angela (a girl's name).

But if I knew that a child's parents were French and was told that it was a common boy's name in France then I'd just think that I'd learned something new and would think it was fine. Children are very accepting of unusual names these days so that wouldn't be a problem.

PattyPan · 06/07/2021 06:37

Yes, common shortening of Angela in the U.K.
Plus tempting fate a bit with his temperament, isn’t it? Grin

PattyPan · 06/07/2021 06:37

@Saltyslug more like onj

pilates · 06/07/2021 07:10

Yes too girly

LublinToDublin · 06/07/2021 07:14

If I saw it written I'd think shortening of Angela.
If I heard it I wouldn't know whether boy or girl nor how to spell it.

AtlasPine · 06/07/2021 07:20

I have taught male students called Ange (usually French African). I like the name - pronounced Ahnge. Also taught male (Spanish) boys called ‘Angel’ which has a pronunciation I can’t transliterated.

jaundicedoutlook · 06/07/2021 07:21

Short for Flange?

Wimpund21 · 06/07/2021 07:23

Like the pronunciation of Ange in Angela?

Far too girly (and 80s) imo.

Funatlast · 06/07/2021 07:25

People won’t know how to pronounce it.

Cyberworrier · 06/07/2021 07:26

Like PP I assumed you meant Ange like short for Angela- or Angelo for a boy. Ange pronounced as it is in a French doesn’t sound at all like how Angel is pronounced in English so many wouldn’t even see the link unless they saw it written down. I would be aware that it may be mispronounced in UK, but if you’re based in France that wont even be much of an issue I guess?

museumum · 06/07/2021 07:26

Very tricky in the U.K. but if you’re French and he’s French then people will manage. If he’s bilingual with no French accent though it will seem odd.

AtlasPine · 06/07/2021 07:32

Not like Ange short for Angela - more like Aunge. We really do have to get away from this little Britain way of labelling lovely strong names ‘girly’ like it’s an insult.

Chilldonaldchill · 06/07/2021 07:42

I think it's lovely. I've come across it before in boys with French parentage. Particularly if the surname is obviously French then the pronunciation will be very straightforward. And even if not, he'll only have to explain it once.
Half the people (maybe not than half) on the Mumsnet baby names board appear to live in tiny villages where no one can cope with any names that aren't pronounced phonetically and aren't traditionally English - and where all children apparently spend their lives teasing others about their names.
That's not real life though so don't worry too much about the responses. Probably 40% of the names in my children's schools were unknown to me before they started - everyone is fine and no one has been teased even once as far as I'm aware (I think a Gideon was once asked if he was giddy).
Ange is a lovely name OP.

MoppaSprings · 06/07/2021 07:43

The new Celtic manager is Ange ( think his is short for Angelos)

ememem84 · 06/07/2021 07:45

Ddads middle name is Ange. I love it.

Doona · 06/07/2021 07:46

To me it's not girly but it does sound bland, like blancmange.

Doona · 06/07/2021 07:47

Except when it's a middle name, then it's sophisticated.

WeAreTheHeroes · 06/07/2021 07:50

The Spanish name Angel is pronounced roughly as An-hel. Perfectly normal name. Ange is the French equivalent.

GolfEchoRomeoTangoIndia · 06/07/2021 07:53

It doesn’t travel particularly well. I agree with the PP that it sounds sophisticated though - it’s a question of whether you and he can live with the slight irritation of people being baffled.

Geamhradh · 06/07/2021 08:07

You're in France so there'll be no problem with it.
It's lovely.

Op is french and is specifically asking if the name is girly in England. I agree that girly shouldn't be an insult but it's hardly a concept that's unique to Britain. Other countries have girls' names that they wouldn't use for boys too.
Saidtoomuch · 06/07/2021 08:19

I don't think people will be confused. My children go to a Catholic school also so obviously hear many Southern and Eastern European names as well as the beautiful traditional Irish names. Many are probably what the British would have traditionally consider girlie. Kids nowadays won't associate Ange with a character from Eastenders in the 90s.

VenusClapTrap · 06/07/2021 09:19

It’s lovely.
