I LOVED Rowan, but could never convince my partner. I think it's gorgeous 😍

Arrierttyclock · 28/06/2021 20:23

Rohan is the Indian spelling pronounced Ro Han. I like both but spell it the way you want it pronounced so Rowan

30degreesandmeltinghere · 28/06/2021 20:24

I have a ds Roan. Nearly 20 now. Still love it and so does he. No emphasis on a 'w' sound....

cheapskatemum · 28/06/2021 20:30

Love Rowan. Rohan reminds me of the outdoor clothing brand.

Sexnotgender · 28/06/2021 22:14

@tiff00

I've never heard of the second pronunciation
I have but it’s not common I don’t think.
thatllberight · 28/06/2021 22:23

I know three Rowan's all with the second pronunciation. Could be a Scottish thing?

blublub · 28/06/2021 22:31

It was my boy choice name 🙂 but baby came out a girl (didn’t want to know the sex before birth).

Hen2018 · 28/06/2021 23:10

Not enthusiastic.

As long as your surname isn’t Berry.

BillyIsMyBunny · 28/06/2021 23:11

Yay

starfire88 · 29/06/2021 10:59

I really like this name

Breadandbutterpudding85 · 29/06/2021 11:56

Rowan is my baby girls name and to be honest if I'd realised how popular and trendy the name has become at the same time as nearly identical sounding name RoMan with an M I wouldn't have chosen it. I hadn't realised RoMan is the fastest rising boy name in the top 100. There's two RoMans and my Rowan at my small local nursery. Not surprising really given that both Rowan and Roman are racing up the top 100 both for the first time in history. I continually meet other baby RoMans and am often asked "is your Ro-an spelt with an W, M or N in the middle??". It's taken the shine off the name for me and I know the name will date badly, but that probably doesn't bother you, I'm sure lots of people don't care. It's my own fault for not looking at the name charts.
The name is also inevitably shortened to "Row" even when I've asked people not to. It sounds like rowing a boat. I don't like it. Too late for me to change now but would if I could.

RailingOnandOn · 29/06/2021 11:59

The rowan tree is pronounced differently in Scotland so yes o think that will be it.

RailingOnandOn · 29/06/2021 12:00

So that's row to rhyme with cow.

antibacterial · 29/06/2021 12:51

Overdone and overused in recent years, sadly.
So many Roman, Rowan, Reuben....'s around now, really dull.
Don't like shortening to Row. Horrid.
Like a previous poster said, unisex names rarely stay unisex and convert over time to 'girl' names. Looking at the official statistics in Engalnd and America, name Rowan is still used more commonly for boys but for example its now a top 200 girl name in America and a top 100 girl name in Scotland in 2019 so I think if that trend continues there will be a tipping point eventually and the name becomes unuable for boys. Not yet a while though. It happened eventually for Kerry, Hillary, Ashley... all previously unisex or boy names. Now exclusively girls. It is a risk with a unisex name on a boy.

antibacterial · 29/06/2021 12:53
  • unusable
Marcipex · 29/06/2021 20:04

I like Rowan for a girl. I know it’s become popular for boys but I mainly know female Rowans.
Roman is nicer for a boy. Not as girly.
I do know a Rohan but his free spirit has put me off it.

LadyGAgain · 29/06/2021 20:10

Awful.

lakesummer · 29/06/2021 20:22

I like it.
I automatically pronounce it the second way, I'm guessing because I'm Scottish.

musicalfrog · 29/06/2021 23:48

@antibacterial Ashley is very much still unisex. My second would have been an Ashley (had she been a boy!)

Marcipex · 30/06/2021 07:00

@Breadandbutterpudding85 it’s a beautiful name and a shame you regret it.
My Rowan is not called Row, it is shortened to Roo because she is so small.

Synchrony · 30/06/2021 13:21

I really like it. It's a boy's name to me, I would never use it for a girl. The girl version imo is Rowena and I hate how boy names morph into girl names.

tiff00 · 02/07/2021 15:48

@Synchrony me too! Vyvyan is such a cool boys name!

@tiff00

yay or nay?
"yay or nay" depends on what you're after really @tiff00 Rowan (Roman, Rohan, Roan) are very trendy, increasingly popular, run of the mill names these days. Rowan, Roman, Ronnie, Rory, Reuben and so on all ONS top One Hundred and booming in popularity so it's very much a name that will blend in and mesh with all the other popular trendy names, if that's what you're wanting. I personally prefer Rowan for a girl. In England (unlike Scotland) the name is currently more popualr for boys than girls. But I agree with PPs that one day, as with all unisex names, it'll most likely become exclusively a girl name . In fact about half the baby Rowans i know are girls and half boys. I know about 7 baby Romans lol.

If you're wanting anything remotely unusual or a bit different, then I'd say "nay" to your question. Just depends what you want

Cbeebiesrehab · 03/07/2021 09:23

My DS was almost Rowan but it just didn’t feel right. Glad I didn’t as he really suits the name we went with. I couldn’t shake the feeling that Rowan felt more like a girls name-although ended up going with another quite unisex name anyway! I think Rowan will get confused with Roman a lot too.
